Prognostic significance of preoperative and postoperative CA 19-9 normalization in pancreatic adenocarcinoma treated with neoadjuvant therapy or surgery first

Timothy P. DiPeri et al.

Summary: This study compared the normalization of serum carbohydrate 19-9 (CA19-9) levels before and after surgery in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who underwent neoadjuvant therapy (NT) versus surgery-first (SF). The results showed that normal pre/postoperative CA19-9 was associated with better recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). Nearly 30% of SF patients failed to achieve postoperative CA19-9 normalization. NT should be considered for patients with elevated CA19-9 levels, and ideal SF patients may have normal CA19-9 levels at presentation.

Role of CA 19.9 in the Management of Resectable Pancreatic Cancer: State of the Art and Future Perspectives

Alessandro Coppola et al.

Summary: CA 19.9 plays an important role in the management of patients with resectable pancreatic cancer, but there are current limitations. Further research is needed to fully explore the potential of CA 19.9 and define its role in biological staging.

Summary: This study assessed the role of preoperative serum CA 19-9 and CEA concentrations in the survival prognosis of patients with periampullary carcinoma and found that CA 19-9 may be a useful marker in predicting prognosis at the time of diagnosis.

A population-based study on incidence, treatment, and survival in ampullary cancer in the Netherlands

Evelien J. M. de Jong et al.

Summary: Incidence and overall survival of ampullary cancer in the Netherlands increased from 1989 to 2016, likely due to increased resection rates and use of adjuvant therapy observed during the study period.

Neoadjuvant therapy versus surgery first for ampullary carcinoma: A propensity score-matched analysis of the NCDB

Marissa Guo et al.

Summary: A study comparing neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery with surgery first for ampullary carcinoma patients found no significant difference in overall survival outcomes, indicating that neoadjuvant therapy does not confer a survival advantage over surgery first in this population.

Preoperative 2-[18F]FDG PET-CT aids in the prognostic stratification for patients with primary ampullary carcinoma

Pei-Ju Chuang et al.

Summary: This study found that preoperative 2-[F-18]FDG PET-CT imaging in patients with ampullary carcinoma undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy provided independent prognostic value, with lymphovascular invasion, involved margin in pathology, and tumor retention index from the dual-phase PET being associated with disease-free survival (DFS), and involved margin, post-recurrence chemotherapy, and metabolic tumor volume (MTV) being associated with overall survival (OS).
