The effect of hotel livestreaming on viewers? purchase intention: Exploring the role of parasocial interaction and emotional engagement

Huawen Shen et al.

Summary: Livestreaming is a crucial marketing tool that can enhance viewers' emotional engagement with hotels, thus increasing their purchase intention. This study examines the antecedents and purchase intention of viewers who interact with hotel livestreaming hosts, based on parasocial interaction theory and similarity attraction theory. The findings demonstrate that viewers' self-congruence and value congruence with hosts enhance their parasocial interaction, leading to stronger emotional engagement and purchase intention. Emotional engagement is found to mediate the relationship between parasocial interaction and purchase intention. The results also suggest that hotels should create livestreaming opportunities through events and amplify user-generated content communications to foster emotional engagement and boost bookings.

An exploration of actor-network theory and social affordance for the development of a tourist attraction: A case study of a Jimmy-related theme park, Taiwan

Yeong-Shyang Chen et al.

Summary: This article uses actor-network theory (ANT) and social affordance to examine conceptually how a postmodern tourist attraction, a Jimmy-themed tourist attraction, has been enacted into a relational network composed of multiple and heterogeneous actors/actants. By analyzing the transformation of figures from Jimmy-related picture books into the social affordances of a postmodern tourist attraction, the paper emphasizes the importance of connecting human and nonhuman actors through evolving mechanisms of ordering and valuating attractiveness. The conceptual application of ANT and social affordance is argued to provide an alternative approach to the study of tourist attractions.
