Metastability and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Cu2SnO3 and Cu2-XLiXTiO3: Two Cu(I)-Based Oxides with Delafossite Structures

Shaun O'Donnell et al.

Summary: Metastable p-type Cu(I)-based semiconductors, Cu2SnO3 (I) and Cu2-xLixTiO3 (II, xmin similar to 0.4), were synthesized via cation-exchange reactions. These crystalline semiconductors, not predicted in any materials databases, have a low reaction temperature of similar to 475 degrees C. Both phases crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system and exhibit edge-shared hexagonal layers. The optical band gaps decrease with Cu(I) content, and the semiconductor films exhibit p-type photocurrents.

The Ising triangular-lattice antiferromagnet neodymium heptatantalate as a quantum spin liquid candidate

T. Arh et al.

Summary: Evidence for a quantum spin liquid phase in NdTa7O19 is reported, with effective spin-1/2 degrees of freedom and Ising-like nearest-neighbour correlations stabilized by strong spin-orbit coupling, allowing spin excitations to persist at low temperatures.

Capturing Metastable Oxide Semiconductors for Applications in Solar Energy Conversion

Paul A. Maggard

Summary: Many small bandgap semiconductors with promising properties for solar energy conversion have been discovered as metastable solids, showing high photocatalytic activities and suitable semiconductor properties. Current research efforts are focused on unlocking the potential of these semiconductors through new advances in synthetic approaches and understanding of structure-property relationships.

Tetragonal tungsten bronze type Sn(ii)-based quaternary oxides: a new class of visible-light-absorbing semiconductors for photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Yalong Zou et al.

Summary: This study reports a Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze type Sn(ii) oxide and its photoanodes for the first time, with a bandgap of 1.85 eV and intense absorption characteristics. The photoanode of this oxide shows an IPCE 10 times higher than that of the pyrochlore polymorph, indicating new possibilities for solar energy conversion materials.
