Effects of Boron on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High-Nb TiAl Alloy Fabricated via Laser Melting Deposition

Junmei Huo et al.

Summary: The high-Nb TiAl alloy was modified by adding boron particles, resulting in a crack-free alloy with improved room-temperature plasticity. The addition of boron prevented the rapid growth of beta crystals and refined the lamellar structure, resulting in improved mechanical properties. The TiB particles also hindered dislocation movement and increased the plasticity of the alloy.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of LaB6/Ti-6Al-4V Composites Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting

Dongdong He et al.

Summary: TiB + La2O3/Ti-6Al-4V composites were prepared using selective laser melting technology, and the effect of LaB6 content on the composite samples’ quality, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties was investigated. The results showed that with increasing LaB6 content, the sample’s relative density decreased, TiB precipitates changed their structure, and the dislocations accumulated around the reinforcements, leading to enhanced tensile strength. Compared to pure Ti-6Al-4V sample, the addition of 3 wt% LaB6 significantly increased hardness, tensile strength, and reduced wear volume. This study demonstrated the potential of using LaB6 to improve the mechanical performance of titanium alloys in additive manufacturing.

Wire arc additive manufacturing of network microstructure (TiB+TiC)/Ti6Al4V composites using flux-cored wires

Zhuorui Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process using flux-cored wire was developed to fabricate Ti6Al4V matrix composites reinforced with TiB and TiC particles. The introduction of reinforcement resulted in the formation of a refined net-basket-dominated (alpha+beta)-Ti matrix and a stable network microstructure. The microhardness of the samples increased with increasing reinforcement fraction, but the wear resistance decreased in the 10 wt% sample due to the reduced ductility.

High-temperature tensile and creep properties of TiB-reinforced Ti6Al4V composite fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

Zhiguang Zhou et al.

Summary: Titanium matrix composites fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) have shown superior high-temperature tensile strength and creep resistance compared to pure Ti6Al4V alloy. The microstructure of the Ti6Al4V-TiB composite plays a crucial role in determining its high-temperature performance. Specifically, the presence of TiB whiskers effectively pins dislocations and enhances creep resistance, while the increased alpha p/beta t phase interface contributes to improved creep resistance in the bimodal Ti6Al4V-TiB composite.

Selective laser melting of Ti6Al4V-B4C-BN in situ reactive composites

Kellen D. Traxel et al.

Summary: The desire for higher application temperatures and complex geometries for metallic materials has driven significant development in additive manufacturing (AM) of metal-ceramic composites. However, there is limited understanding of the process-microstructure-properties relationships for these materials and processing strategies. In this study, the processing window and high-temperature oxidation performance of an in situ reactive, oxidation-resistant titanium metal-matrix composite reinforced with boron nitride (BN) and boron carbide (B4C) were investigated via selective laser melting (SLM) to understand the effects of processing parameters on the in situ reactive characteristics and their influence on build reliability and high-temperature oxidation performance. Process optimization resulted in composites with high relative density and improved high-temperature oxidation resistance compared to the base material.

From crack-prone to crack-free: Unravelling the roles of LaB6 in a ß-solidifying TiAl alloy fabricated with laser additive manufacturing

Danni Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic roles of La and B in grain refinement and crack elimination in a LAMed ss-solidifying TiAl alloy with LaB6 addition. Results show that La2O3 and TiB in-situ formed via reaction between the ss-solidifying TiAl and the added LaB6 nanoparticles. The optimal addition level of 0.5 wt% LaB6 can achieve balanced mechanical properties at both room temperature and 800 degrees C. Excessive LaB6 addition leads to agglomeration of in-situ formed precipitates, reducing density and deteriorating mechanical properties.
