Chitosan/agarose/graphene oxide nanohydrogel as drug delivery system of 5-fluorouracil in breast cancer therapy

Mariyeh Rajaei et al.

Summary: A promising methodology has been developed to improve drug loading performance and achieve sustained release of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for breast cancer treatment. A pH-sensitive and biocompatible hydrogel of chitosan/agarose/graphene oxide (CS/AG/GO) was synthesized with glyoxal as cross-linker, and 5-FU-loaded nanocomposites (NCs) of CS/AG/GO were prepared. The NCs showed high drug loading and encapsulation efficiency, and exhibited effective sustained drug release and cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells.

Smart pH-responsive magnetic graphene quantum dots nanocarriers for anticancer drug delivery of curcumin

Elham Seyyedi Zadeh et al.

Summary: A targeted multifunctional anticancer drug carrier was developed by synthesizing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) from graphene oxide (GO) and preparing a magnetic nanocomposite with Fe2+ and Fe3+. Folic acid (FA) was then conjugated to the nanocomposite, resulting in the formation of GQDs-Fe3O4-FA. Characterization analyses confirmed the successful synthesis of GQDs-Fe3O4 and the attachment of FA. The nanocomposite exhibited superparamagnetic behavior and demonstrated selective cytotoxicity against cancer cells. The cumulative release of the anticancer drug curcumin was monitored in different pH conditions. The results suggest that GQDs-Fe3O4-FA has the potential for therapeutic applications as a drug delivery system.

pH-responsive polyacrylic acid (PAA)-carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel incorporating halloysite nanotubes (HNT) for controlled curcumin delivery

Mehrab Pourmadadi et al.

Summary: A pH-sensitive nanocomposite was synthesized by coating halloysite nanotubes (HNT) with polyacrylic acid (PAA)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel for controlled delivery of curcumin (CUR) to MCF-7 cancer cells. Hazelnut oil and Span 80 surfactant were added to minimize the nanocomposite size and increase its uniformity, and to enhance the stability and retention of CUR as an anticancer drug, respectively. The resulting drug delivery system exhibited high drug loading and encapsulation efficiency, pH-sensitivity, and sustained drug release. It also demonstrated strong toxicity against MCF-7 cancer cells and induced apoptosis. These results highlight the potential of PAA/CMC/HNT/CUR hydrogel nanocomposites as smart drug delivery vehicles for breast cancer treatment.
