Bariatric surgery, osteoarthritis and arthroplasty of the hip and knee in Swedish Obese Subjects-up to 31 years follow-up of a controlled intervention study

L. S. Lohmander et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term effect of obesity and bariatric surgery on the incidences of osteoarthritis and arthroplasty of hip and knee. The results showed that the bariatric surgery group had a lower incidence of hip osteoarthritis but a higher incidence of knee arthroplasty compared to the control group.

Cost-Effectiveness of Surgical Weight-Loss Interventions for Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis and Class III Obesity

Aleksandra M. Kostic et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects and cost-effectiveness of gastric surgeries on knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 40 kg/m². The study found that the usual care + Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) strategy increased the quality-adjusted life expectancy and cost compared to usual care alone, while the usual care + laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) strategy had fewer benefits. Both RYGB and LSG reduced opioid use, but for patients with a BMI between 38 and 41 kg/m², the usual care + LSG strategy was more effective. The study suggests that RYGB offers good value for knee OA patients with a BMI > 40 kg/m², while LSG may provide good value for those with a BMI between 35 and 41 kg/m².

Correlation between Abdominal Obesity and Pain in Knee Osteoarthritis

Tekaya Rawdha et al.

Summary: Objective Obesity is an independent risk factor for knee osteoarthritis. This study aimed to determine the relationship between abdominal obesity and the severity of knee osteoarthritis, including pain and functional impairment. The results showed that both obesity and abdominal obesity were significantly associated with pain, disability, and radiographic severity of knee osteoarthritis.

Outcomes of Total Knee Arthroplasty Revisions in Obese and Morbidly Obese Patient Populations

William R. Bigham et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of body mass index (BMI) in the cause for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and whether BMI classification is predictive of outcomes. The study found significant differences in primary and repeat revision etiologies among weight classes, with obese and morbidly obese patients having a greater risk of requiring repeat revision surgery.

Timing and Type of Bariatric Surgery Preceding Total Knee Arthroplasty Leads to Similar Complications and Outcomes

Oliver C. Sax et al.

Summary: This study compares the timing and type of bariatric surgery (BS) prior to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in terms of medical and surgical complications. The results show that the timing and type of BS are associated with the incidence of complications, but they are lower than that of patients with BMI > 40.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of previous bariatric surgery on prosthetic revisions and postoperative complications after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The analysis found that patients with prior bariatric surgery were associated with increased risks of long-term revision, long-term infection, long-term stiffness or manipulation under anesthesia (MUA), and blood transfusions.

Effect of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass on Weight Loss, Comorbidities, and Reflux at 10 Years in Adult Patients With Obesity The SLEEVEPASS Randomized Clinical Trial

Paulina Salminen et al.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) at 10 years. The results showed that LRYGB resulted in greater weight loss compared to LSG. However, both procedures were effective in achieving sustainable weight loss. LSG was associated with a higher prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, while the occurrence of Barrett esophagus was similar between the two procedures.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the influence of bariatric surgery on hip and knee joint pain in obese individuals, with results suggesting a positive impact. However, conclusive evidence is lacking due to potential bias in the majority of included studies. Well-designed randomized controlled trials using standardized joint pain measures are needed for further evaluation.
