Tunable active-sites of Co- nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanofiber as high performance bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalyst

Huan He et al.

Summary: In this study, low-cost Co-ZIF/CNF electrocatalysts with high OER and ORR performance were prepared using electrospinning and simple pyrolysis. The Co-ZIF/CNF catalysts contain both CoOx and Co-N-y active sites, exhibiting bifunctional activity for OER and ORR. The optimized catalyst Co-ZIF(1.5)/10CNF(2) shows outstanding OER and ORR catalytic performance with a low OER overpotential of 390 mV, an onset potential of 0.93 V, and a half-wave potential of 0.85 V for ORR. The catalyst also demonstrates great stability with 87.53% current retention after 12 hours. This study provides a new strategy for designing and preparing bifunctional catalysts for OER and ORR.

Strong-Proton-Adsorption Co-Based Electrocatalysts Achieve Active and Stable Neutral Seawater Splitting

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Direct electrolysis of pH-neutral seawater to generate hydrogen faces an anodic competition issue between the chlorine evolution and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), resulting in low current density and limited operating stability. In this study, a proton-adsorption-promoting strategy has been proposed to increase the OER rate, allowing for enhanced and stable neutral seawater splitting. Palladium-doped cobalt oxide (Co3-xPdxO4) catalysts exhibit the best performance with an OER overpotential of 370 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in pH-neutral simulated seawater, outperforming Co3O4 by 70 mV. Co3-xPdxO4 catalysts also demonstrate long-term stability in neutral seawater, with 450 hours at 200 mA cm(-2) and 20 hours at 1 A cm(-2). Experimental and theoretical analyses suggest that the inclusion of SPA cations accelerates the rate-determining water dissociation step in the neutral OER pathway, while ruling out additional OER sites as a main factor.

Optimization of pH-universal O2 reduction electrocatalysis by precise control over structural variables via basic bathing

Chuangchuang Yang et al.

Summary: Biomass-based catalysts show promise as alternatives to Pt for ORR, but optimization requires tuning structural variables, enhancing mass transport, and achieving pH-universal catalytic activities. The 'basic bathing' method allows precise control over the structure of nitrogen-doped metal-free ORR electrocatalysts, leading to improved performance and pH-universal catalytic activity. Results indicate the importance of mesopores and nitrogen species distributions in enhancing pH-universal ORR performance.
