Tropical tree growth sensitivity to climate is driven by species intrinsic growth rate and leaf traits

David Bauman et al.

Summary: Both climate means and anomalies shape tree growth in tropical forests, and species' sensitivity to climate can vary widely among different species. Drier forests and fast-growing species are more sensitive to water stress anomalies, and species traits related to water use and photosynthesis partly explain differences in growth sensitivity to both climate means and anomalies.

Physiological traits and response strategies of four subtropical tree species exposed to drought

Ting Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the drought response strategies of four common tree species and found variability in their physiological adaptations to drought. Species such as Ormosia pinnata and Dalbergia odorifera showed specific traits to reduce water loss, while Michelia macclurei exhibited the highest tolerance to drought due to earlier stomatal closure and lower turgor loss point. The findings highlight the importance of understanding species-specific responses to drought in managing forest ecosystems.

Extreme drought exacerbates plant nitrogen-phosphorus imbalance in nitrogen enriched grassland

Xiao-Sa Liang et al.

Summary: The nitrogen-phosphorus (N-P) imbalance induced by N enrichment is a growing concern in ecology. This study investigated the interactive effects of N addition and extreme drought on N:P ratios in a grassland ecosystem. The results showed that extreme drought could exacerbate the N-induced N-P imbalance and have significant impacts on species turnover and community-level N:P ratios. These findings highlight the complexity in predicting ecosystem N-P imbalance under the influence of multiple global change drivers.

Investment of needle nitrogen to photosynthesis controls the nonlinear productivity response of young Chinese fir trees to nitrogen deposition

Renshan Li et al.

Summary: This study tested the effect of nitrogen deposition on aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) of three-year old Chinese fir trees and estimated the saturation threshold. The response of ANPP to nitrogen addition rates was explained by the net photosynthetic rates of needles. Dual isotope measurements indicated that photosynthetic capacity mediated the response of photosynthesis and ANPP to nitrogen addition in young Chinese fir trees.

Fine-root functional trait response to nitrogen deposition across forest ecosystems: A meta-analysis

Xiaoxiang Zhao et al.

Summary: Nitrogen deposition has complex effects on fine root traits in forest ecosystems, mainly affecting root nutrient content and stoichiometry. Additionally, it increases fine root respiration and decreases fine root biomass, root tissue density, and fungal colonization with longer duration of N deposition. Fine root traits are also regulated by abiotic factors such as N form, forest type, and soil depth.

Addition of nitrogen to canopy versus understorey has different effects on leaf traits of understorey plants in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest

Songbo Tang et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of understorey nitrogen (UAN) and canopy nitrogen (CAN) addition on leaf traits of understorey plants in a subtropical evergreen forest. The results indicated significant differences in the effects of different addition methods on leaf traits, suggesting that understorey plants respond differently to UAN compared to atmospheric nitrogen deposition.

Tree height and leaf drought tolerance traits shape growth responses across droughts in a temperate broadleaf forest

Ian R. McGregor et al.

Summary: The study found that tree height was negatively correlated with drought tolerance, with taller trees being more vulnerable to drought due to exposure to higher solar radiation and evaporative demand. Additionally, species with leaves that lost less water and shrinkage upon desiccation showed greater drought tolerance under dry conditions.

Nitrogen nutrition addition mitigated drought stress by improving carbon exchange and reserves among two temperate trees

Hongxia Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that drought stress decreased net photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs), while N addition increased A and gs, accompanied by increased gs under the interactive effects of drought and N addition. This indicates that N nutrient availability has a suppressing effect on drought stress and improves adverse conditions induced by drought by altering carbon exchange traits.

Canopy processing of N deposition increases short-term leaf N uptake and photosynthesis, but not long-term N retention for aspen seedlings

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The processing of nitrogen in forest canopies can impact short-term leaf nitrogen supply and photosynthesis, but not long-term nitrogen retention. There were no significant differences in plant biomass, nitrogen concentration, and leaf nitrogen resorption between canopy and soil nitrogen applications. This highlights the importance of considering canopy nitrogen processing for accurately predicting the impact of nitrogen deposition.

Effect of Long-Term Nitrogen and Phosphorus Additions on Understory Plant Nutrients in a Primary Tropical Forest

Qinggong Mao et al.

Summary: A long-term fertilization experiment in a primary forest in south China showed that most understory plants in tropical forests are saturated in nitrogen but have the potential to restore phosphorus. Phosphorus addition can increase phosphorus concentration and alter community composition in tropical forests due to species-specific responses. Nitrogen deposition does not necessarily aggravate plant phosphorus deficiency, and phosphorus addition does not increase nitrogen retention by increasing nitrogen concentration.

Root carbon and nutrient homeostasis determines downy oak sapling survival and recovery from drought

Sheng-Nan Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study found that fertilization had minor effects on saplings' physiological processes to cope with drought, but could reduce sapling mortality during extreme drought. Regardless of nutrient supply, Quercus pubescens showed increased soluble sugar concentration in all tissues with increasing drought intensity, mostly due to starch degradation. After 28 days of drought relief, tissue sugar concentrations decreased, reaching levels comparable to well-watered plants. Only during the recovery process from extreme drought, root NSC concentration strongly declined, leading to almost complete NSC depletion after 28 days of rewetting, simultaneous with new leaves flushing.

Antecedent Drought Condition Affects Responses of Plant Physiology and Growth to Drought and Post-drought Recovery

Ximeng Li et al.

Summary: The findings suggest that antecedent water stress conditions can affect plant responses to drought and recovery dynamics, particularly in the recovery process from mild to severe drought stress. Slow regrowth rates in trees with antecedent water limitations may result from insufficient carbon reserves and impaired hydraulic transport, dependent on the intensity of drought stress.

Responses of functional traits to seven-year nitrogen addition in two tree species: coordination of hydraulics, gas exchange and carbon reserves

Hongxia Zhang et al.

Summary: Our study found that medium nitrogen addition significantly increased the wood-specific hydraulic conductivity and vessel diameter of trees, but also led to higher risk of embolism and decreased leaf water potential. Nitrogen addition promoted photosynthetic capacity through increasing leaf nitrogen concentration, while not affecting stomatal conductance. Additionally, there were positive correlations between wood traits (vessel diameter and PLC) and foliar soluble sugars, indicating a regulatory role of carbohydrates in maintaining tree hydraulic integrity under increasing nitrogen deposition.
