A developmental perspective on feedback: How corrective feedback influences children's literacy, mathematics, and problem solving

Emily R. Fyfe et al.

Summary: This article provides a developmental perspective on how corrective feedback influences learning in childhood, specifically for children between the ages of 3 and 11. The authors review empirical papers published between 1990 and 2022, examining the effects of corrective feedback on children's performance in literacy, mathematics, and problem solving. The synthesized research offers insights into the effectiveness of corrective feedback in early childhood, the characteristics of effective feedback messages at different ages, and the role of individual learner differences. The article concludes with recommendations for future research and ways teachers can provide effective feedback to children.

Predictors of reading and spelling skills in German: The role of morphological awareness

Ruth Goergen et al.

Summary: The role of morphological awareness in literacy development differs between reading and spelling in German orthography, with morphological awareness being a better predictor for spelling due to the high consistency between morphology and orthography. This study highlights the importance of morphological awareness in understanding the structure of a given orthography and its implications for literacy skills.

Early Handwriting Ability Predicts the Growth of Children's Spelling, but Not Reading, Skills

Verena E. Pritchard et al.

Summary: In a large sample of 5- to 6-year-old children, this study found that variations in handwriting skills, but not generic fine motor skills, accounted for unique variance in the growth of spelling, but not reading. This suggests that writing words may create motoric representations of spelling patterns that support the development of children's orthographic knowledge. Therefore, practicing writing words may help children learn to spell.
