Coupling mechanism between systematic elastic deformation and gear surface damage

Yifan Huangfu et al.

Summary: This paper develops a deformable body dynamic model to obtain systematic elastic deformation and uses a hybrid finite element-analytical contact model to obtain load distribution under non-ideal meshing conditions. A generalized surface damage model is developed based on the transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory, considering the concurrent effects of surface wear and pitting. The proposed multi-physics model bridges macroscopic deformation and microscopic behaviors and can be used for tooth fault prognosis, physics-based condition monitoring, and configuration design.

Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a spur gear pair considering extended tooth contact and coupling effect between gear neighboring teeth

Zhengfa Li et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a dynamic model of spur gear pair considering the extended tooth contact, coupling effect between gear neighboring teeth, and some time-varying parameters. The study reveals the impact of the extended tooth contact and coupling effect on the bifurcation characteristics of the gear system. The results show that the coupling effect between neighboring teeth intensifies the system bifurcation and chaotic motion, while extended tooth contact enhances this effect. However, more extended tooth contact decreases the parameter range of system bifurcation.

Improved analytical model for mesh stiffness calculation of cracked helical gear considering interactions between neighboring teeth

JieYu Ning et al.

Summary: An improved mesh stiffness calculation method for helical gear with spatial crack is proposed in this study to consider the coupling effects between neighboring loaded teeth, improving the accuracy and applicability of the calculation. The load distribution law for the engaged cracked tooth along the tooth width and profile can be obtained. The results show that the mesh stiffness of the multi-tooth engagement calculation using this model can be further improved compared with traditional methods.

Use of transmission error for a quantitative estimation of root-crack severity in gears

Zhan Yie Chin et al.

Summary: Gear transmission error (TE) has been recognized as an effective diagnostic tool for condition monitoring, particularly in assessing gear wear severity. However, there has been a lack of accurate and reliable TE-based methods for estimating crack size in crack diagnostics. This paper proposes a new methodology that overcomes the challenges of dynamic TE effects and the separation of profile error and compliance-related tooth deflections, achieving automated identification of the cracked tooth and crack-depth estimation using different speeds and loads.

A new autocorrelation-based strategy for multiple fault feature extraction from gearbox vibration signals

Xiuzhi He et al.

Summary: Gearboxes play a crucial role in rotating machines, and diagnosing faults in them is essential for cost reduction and preventing casualties and property losses. Due to the presence of heavy Gaussian and non-Gaussian background noises, the multi-fault diagnosis of gearboxes becomes challenging. The proposed LEASgram method, utilizing the CFI indicator for multi-fault detection, demonstrates significant capability in fault identification and separation.

Transmission error investigation of gearbox using rigid-flexible coupling dynamic model: Theoretical analysis and experiments

Tiantang Duan et al.

Summary: In this study, a system-level investigation of gearbox transmission error (TE) was conducted by proposing a rigid-flexible coupling dynamic model. The results showed that TE increases with load, but decreases when considering housing flexibility. Properly decreasing the stiffness of the housing and increasing the inner radius of the hollow shaft can reduce system TE.

Summary: This study elaborates on the characteristics and evolution process of a gear system with five-state meshing behavior by establishing a new nonlinear dynamic model, revealing the generation mechanism and influencing factors of multi-state meshing behavior. The results show the impact of parameter changes on the evolution of five-state meshing behavior, particularly in reducing the number of teeth disengagement through grazing bifurcation, and inspiring chaotic behavior for the system's multi-state meshing vibration.
