Inferring the multiplicity of founder variants initiating HIV-1 infection: a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis

James Baxter et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the probability of HIV infection initiated by multiple founder variants. The results showed that people who inject drugs and men who have sex with men are more likely to have multiple variant infections, while female-to-male infections are less probable. These findings contribute to a better understanding of how the evolution and epidemiology of HIV-1 impact clinical outcomes.

Improving Biomarker-based HIV Incidence Estimation in the Treatment Era

Ian E. Fellows et al.

Summary: Estimating HIV-1 incidence using biomarker assays in cross-sectional surveys is important but limited by uncertainty about input parameters. This article proposes a new method for calculating appropriate estimates and provides a new formula for incidence. Applying this method to eleven surveys shows good agreement with previous estimates, except in countries with high testing rates.

HIV incidence and mortality in transgender women in the eastern and southern USA: a multisite cohort study

Andrea L. Wirtz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate HIV incidence in a multisite cohort of transgender women in the eastern and southern USA. The study found that HIV incidence was higher among Black participants and those living in the south, while the mortality rate was higher among Latinx participants.

Full-spectrum HIV drug resistance mutation detection by high-resolution complete pol gene sequencing

Gina Faraci et al.

Summary: This study combines microdroplet amplification, unique molecular identifier labeling, and long-read high-throughput sequencing to obtain full-length pol gene sequences from HIV-infected individuals. It identifies various drug resistance mutations and minority variants, providing better guidance for antiretroviral therapy options.

Use of HIV Recency Assays for HIV Incidence Estimation and Other Surveillance Use Cases: Systematic Review

Shelley N. Facente et al.

Summary: HIV recency assays have been validated for accurately estimating HIV incidence in specific populations at national and subnational levels; however, there is a lack of evidence validating the accuracy and effectiveness of using these assays to identify epidemic trends in non-incidence surveillance use cases. More research is needed to validate the use of recency assays within HIV testing services.

Microdrop Human Immunodeficiency Virus Sequencing for Incidence and Drug Resistance Surveillance

Sung Yong Park et al.

Summary: Microdrop HIV sequencing was developed for precise and cost-efficient HIV incidence and drug resistance surveillances. This method demonstrated enhanced capacity to detect minority variants and drug resistance mutations, promoting global real-time HIV surveillance.

Recent HIV infection among pregnant women in the 2017 antenatal sentinel cross-sectional survey, South Africa: Assay-based incidence measurement

Selamawit Woldesenbet et al.

Summary: The study in South Africa estimated a 1.5% annual HIV incidence among pregnant women, with factors such as being single or cohabiting, and being in an age-disparate relationship among young women, associated with higher odds of recent infection. Despite the lower incidence compared to previous studies, efforts are needed to meet UNAIDS targets and prevent new infections among vulnerable groups.

HIV-1 Recent Infection Testing Algorithm With Antiretroviral Drug Detection to Improve Accuracy of Incidence Estimates

Andrew C. Voetsch et al.

Summary: Including antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) in the recent infection testing algorithm (RITA) improved the accuracy of HIV-1 incidence estimates by removing participants with likely long-term HIV infection, leading to a decrease in estimated new infections across 13 countries.
