Red-Light-Driven CO2 Photoreduction into CH4 and CO Enabled by Narrow-Gap Conjugated Microporous Polymers

Wei Wu et al.

Summary: Herein, the authors report a method for selective CO2 photoreduction into CH4 and CO with red light using conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) at room temperature. By incorporating electron-rich and electron-deficient derivatives, the resulting polymers show broad light absorption and narrow bandgaps. Among them, P3 exhibits the best visible-light reduction activity, achieving high evolution rates of CH4 and CO under red light irradiation and nearly 100% reaction selectivity. The improved performance of P3 can be attributed to its high absorption toward CO2 and improved charge transfer.

In-plane benzene incorporated g-C3N4 microtubes: Enhanced visible light harvesting and carrier transportation for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Wen-Feng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was modified by introducing pi electron-rich benzene rings, which improved the availability of pi electron and created local asymmetry in the heptazine structure. This modification enhanced the separation and transportation of photogenerated charges, as well as enhanced light absorption. The in-plane benzene modified g-C3N4 microtubes showed a CO yield two times higher than pristine g-C3N4 when used in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This work highlights the effectiveness of in-plane benzene modification and 1D hollow structure formation in improving the photoelectric performance of g-C3N4, and provides a efficient protocol for CO2 reduction using nonmetallic semiconductor material and earth-abundant metal co-catalyst.
