Promotion of microwave discharge over carbon catalysts for CO2 reforming of CH4 to syngas

Fusen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the discharge characteristics of carbon materials in microwave fields and explores their effects on the reforming reactions. Results show that different carbon materials exhibit varying discharge intensities, but all produce star-shaped sparks. Particles with a cis-fiber structure and opposing placement are easier to discharge in microwave electric fields. Coconut shell activated carbon with a diameter of 0.6 mm demonstrates a high discharge frequency and sites, leading to the best reaction performance.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of microwave-induced discharge of spherical bio-char with graphite addition and explored the mechanism through electric field simulation. The results showed that bio-char with graphite addition had higher discharge intensity and exhibited a synergistic effect at the initial stage of microwave-induced discharge. The apparent activation energies of microwave-induced discharge were obtained for bio-char and graphite. The formation of electric field polarization provided active sites for microwave discharge. This work is of significance for fundamental research on microwave-induced discharge of carbon-based dielectrics.

Multidirectional Polarization Impacts on Microwave Heating Efficiency: A Molecular Dynamics Research of Microwave Heating of Common Solvents

Hongxiao Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, the higher heating efficiency of the elliptically polarized microwave electric field was investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the heating efficiency of various substances was sequentially larger with the elliptically polarized microwave electric field compared to the linearly polarized microwave electric field. Energy analyses indicated that the utilization rate of microwave energy could be increased with the elliptically polarized microwave electric field. The higher decay speed of the rotation autocorrelation function curves of the elliptically polarized electric field suggested more frequent rotational motion of sample molecules.

Coking Can Enhance Product Yields in the Dry Reforming of Methane

Dingdi Wang et al.

Summary: Unlike the traditional steam reforming process, the dry reforming of methane directly utilizes CO2 to produce syngas. Catalyst deactivation caused by carbon deposition has hindered the industrialization of this process. However, this study provides evidence that carbon deposits on the catalyst surface are actually an intermediate product formed during the DRM reaction and can be removed by reaction with CO2. The presence and nature of carbon deposits have important implications for optimizing DRM reaction conditions and improving yields.

Summary: The dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a promising process for generating syngas while consuming CO2, but industrial applications have been limited due to the high temperatures required to prevent coke formation. Microwave-assisted DRM (MW-DRM) is a promising approach that can utilize excess renewable electrons to rapidly and selectively heat the catalyst bed. Catalyst doping studies have shown that the addition of oxophilic transition metals prevents over-reduction and stabilizes the perovskitic phases under reaction conditions.

Coking Can Enhance Product Yields in the Dry Reforming of Methane

Dingdi Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the coking process, oxidation process, and nature of carbon deposits during dry (or CO2) reforming of methane (DRM). It provides evidence that carbon deposits on a standard Ni catalyst surface can be reaction intermediates produced and removed during the DRM reaction. The study identifies two principal forms of coke - two-dimensional graphite and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes - with implications on reaction conditions and overall DRM yield optimization.
