Composition and size dependent torsion fracture of metallic glasses

J. Dong et al.

Summary: The study found that the torsion fracture of metallic glasses may deviate from the circumferential shear plane, and the fracture angle is closely related to the composition and size, showing an intrinsic relationship between fracture mechanism and fracture toughness in MGs.

Summary: The additive manufacturing of bulk metallic glasses through laser powder bed fusion has attracted increasing interest, especially for industry-relevant alloys based on iron or zirconium. Although the achievable surface qualities are limited, applying thermoplastic forming on LPBF-formed parts can help decrease surface roughness and imprint finely structured surface patterns for various applications.

Bending fatigue behavior of thin Zr61Ti2Cu25Al12 bulk metallic glass beams for compliant mechanisms application

Diao-Feng Li et al.

Summary: The bending fatigue behavior of thinner Zr61Ti2Cu25Al12 (ZT1) BMG beams was investigated under cyclic bending load using three-point bending tests. The fatigue endurance limits (FELs) and fatigue life of ZT1 beams were found to be independent of beam thickness, with fatigue cracks initiating at extrinsic microvoids. Crack propagation behavior was influenced by cyclic stress level, with different mechanisms dominating crack propagation and generating unique crack trajectories. Fatigue endurance limits of ZT1 beams were superior to traditional materials for compliant mechanisms, demonstrating better reliability and larger deformations under cyclic loading.

Zr61Ti2Cu25Al12 bulk metallic glass under three-point bending: Characteristic of large-deflection deformation

Diao-Feng Li et al.

Summary: The research investigated nonlinear large-deflection deformation in bending for Zr61Ti2Cu25Al12 (ZT1) metallic glass beams using a three-point bending approach. The study found that increasing the span-to-thickness ratio can achieve higher flexibility, with intrinsic sources responsible for buckling events justifiable through theoretical analytical solutions. The ZT1 MG showed significant advantages compared to current candidate materials in compliant mechanisms, particularly in components requiring large-deflection elastic bending and high elastic-strain energy storage.
