Molecular Photoinduced Charge Separation: Fundamentals and Application

Hiroshi Imahori

Summary: We have designed and synthesized donor-acceptor linked systems to investigate the process of photo-induced charge separation. Porphyrin-fullerene and polymer-fullerene linked molecules have been found to be effective model systems for studying issues in excited-state generation, charge separation, and charge dissociation. We have also proposed a new concept, dynamic exciton, to establish a comprehensive photochemistry involving the manipulation of locally excited state, charge-transfer state, and charge-separated state. Moreover, we have developed versatile dyes and donor/acceptor molecules for better understanding the underlying mechanism and improving the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells and bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. Additionally, we have successfully utilized the giant dipole moment produced from donor-acceptor linked molecules to regulate the membrane potential of living biological cells, which is a promising approach in optogenetics and neuronal therapy by light.

Non-Radiative Recombination Energy Losses in Non-Fullerene Organic Solar Cells

Dan He et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent studies and achievements on the non-radiative recombination energy loss (Delta E-3) in non-fullerene acceptor-based organic solar cells (OSCs). By exploring material design, morphology manipulation, ternary strategy, mechanism, and theoretical study, it is hoped to further reduce energy loss and enhance the power conversion efficiency.

Renewed Prospects for Organic Photovoltaics

Guichuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have undergone three stages of development, including optimizing bulk heterojunctions, improving donor-acceptor match, and developing non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). NFAs have resulted in higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) surpassing 15% due to reduced energy losses and increased quantum efficiencies. The review provides an update on recent progress in OPV technology, including novel NFAs and donors, understanding structure-property relationships, and commercialization challenges.

Manipulation of Charge-Transfer States by Molecular Design: Perspective from Dynamic Exciton

Hiroshi Imahori et al.

Summary: Dynamic exciton, as an important concept in photochemistry, covers various aspects in nature, science, and technology, especially in photoinduced and electrically induced electron transfer. It includes locally excited, charge-transfer, and charge-separated states, with key factors such as CT degree, spin multiplicity, and D-A interaction. The concept of dynamic exciton provides a new approach for innovative designs of energy conversion materials and assemblies, emphasizing the cooperation between nuclear motions and electron-phonon coupling.
