Catalytic (copper) hydrothermal liquefaction for lignin to produce high quality bio-oil and nano Cu carbon hybrids material

Ankit Kumar et al.

Summary: In this study, in-situ hydrothermal liquefaction of direct Cu salt solution with lignin and Cu-impregnated lignin was conducted to increase bio-oil yield and produce nanometal carbon hybrids. The performance of both processes was evaluated by varying the temperature (200°C to 320°C) and assessing the bio-oil yields. The maximum bio-oil yields achieved were 28.74% and 24.87% for impregnated and direct processes, respectively, at the optimum condition of 280°C, 15 min, and feed-to-solvent ratio of 1:9, which is nearly double the non-catalytic bio-oil yields (10.16%) under similar operating conditions. XRD analysis confirmed the transition of Cu2+ to Cu+ and Cu, while TEM revealed average Cu particle sizes of 15.9 nm and 62.1 nm in hybrids material obtained from direct Cu effluent and Cu-impregnated lignin, respectively.

Catalytic Depolymerization of Lignin for the Selective Production of Phenolic Monomers over Cobalt-Supported Calcium Catalysts

Bijoy Biswas et al.

Summary: A series of cobalt metal-supported calcium oxide catalysts were synthesized and tested for lignin depolymerization. The highest bio-oil yield of 60.2 wt % was obtained using a 10 wt % Co/CaO catalyst under methanol solvent at 160 degrees C for 60 min reaction time. The catalytic bio-oil showed higher heating value and higher presence of aromatic and methoxy compounds compared to non-catalytic bio-oil. The catalyst also demonstrated good stability and recyclability.

Oxidative depolymerization of lignin to vanillin and lactic acid in an aqueous solution

Mingming Peng et al.

Summary: A heterogeneous Mo-based oxide catalyst system with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant was developed for the oxidative depolymerization of lignin to produce high-value platform chemicals in a nearly neutral aqueous environment. The effects of various reaction conditions, including reactant ratios, temperature, duration, and lignin concentration, were investigated. The combination of MoO3 and H2O2 resulted in a superior peroxo complex, leading to the formation of vanillin and lactic acid. The highest yield and selectivity of vanillin were achieved with a MoO3/Al2O3 catalyst, while the highest yield of lactic acid was obtained with MoO3/SiO2.

Catalytic depolymerization of the dealkaline lignin over Co-Mo-S catalysts in supercritical ethanol

Guojun Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the depolymerization of lignin using CoMo sulfide catalysts supported on different carriers in a supercritical ethanol system. The effects of temperature, time, MoS2, and carrier on the lignin depolymerization were examined. The Co-Mo-S/ZrO2 catalyst showed a liquefaction yield of 95.76% with minimal char formation at 340 degrees C for 150 minutes. The liquid product mainly consisted of C-4-C-8 alcohols, C-4-C-10 esters, and C-7-C-10 aromatic compounds. The synergistic effect of active and acid-base sites on the support played a crucial role in the lignin depolymerization process.

Cooperative catalytic effects between aqueous acidic ionic liquid solutions and polyoxometalate-ionic liquid in the oxidative depolymerization of alkali lignin

Junwang Zhang et al.

Summary: The oxidative depolymerization of alkali lignin was achieved using Keggin structure polyoxometalate-ionic liquid (POM-IL) as a catalyst under aerobic conditions. The effects of different catalysts and the acidity of aqueous IL solutions on lignin conversion and product distribution were investigated. Phenolic products had the highest yield and selectivity when POM-IL1 was used, while ketone products had the highest conversion and selectivity when POM-IL2 and POM-IL3 were used. The results demonstrate the successful oxidation of lignin fragments into platform compounds using aqueous acidic ILs (AILs) catalyzed by Keggin structure POM-IL.

Synergistic effect of water-ethanol-formic acid for the depolymerization of industrial waste (black liquor) lignin to phenolic monomers

Masud Rana et al.

Summary: The study investigated the synergistic effect of a mixture solvent of water-ethanol-formic acid for the depolymerization of concentrated acid hydrolysis lignin to produce phenolic monomers. The highest bio-oil yield was obtained at 330 degrees C for 2 h with a water-ethanol-formic acid ratio of 1:1:0.4. Ethanol and formic acid played important roles in increasing solubility and preventing repolymerization, resulting in significant production of phenolic monomers in the bio-oils.

Kraft Lignin Ethanolysis over Zeolites with Different Acidity and Pore Structures for Aromatics Production

Nathan Cody Baxter et al.

Summary: This research focused on depolymerizing lignin in supercritical ethanol using various types of zeolites with different acidity and pore structures. Strong acidity was found effective in breaking down both C-O-C and C-C linkages of lignin, while pore size, especially mesopores, significantly influenced phenol selectivity. These findings provide important guidelines for future selection and design of zeolites for lignin ethanolysis or other hydrocarbon cracking processes.
