Metagenomic analysis of microbiological risk in bioaerosols during biowaste valorization using Musca domestica

Xinyue Kang et al.

Summary: Bioconversion using insects has been recognized as a promising technology for biowaste management and protein production. However, there is limited knowledge about the microbiological risk associated with insect-related bioaerosols, and conventional methods are not sufficient for studying the environmental microbes in detail. In this study, metagenomic analysis revealed that bioaerosols in the Fly rearing room had the highest abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and diversity of mobile gene elements (MGEs). The study also identified specific bacteria as predominant hosts of ARGs and virulence factor genes (VFGs), and identified common co-occurrence patterns between ARGs and VFGs. These findings are significant for assessing the microbiological risk during housefly biowaste conversion process.

Deciphering the distribution and microbial secretors of extracellular polymeric substances associated antibiotic resistance genes in tube wall biofilm

Ziyi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the combined effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and NaClO in a drinking water distribution system (DWDS) and revealed the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) proliferation. Results showed that TetM gene was abundant in both the liquid phase and the biofilm, and total organic carbon (TOC) and temperature were significantly correlated with ARGs in the water phase. ARG abundance in the biofilm phase was correlated with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Microbial community structure influenced the proliferation and spread of ARGs in the water phase. Antibiotic concentration influenced ARGs by affecting mobile genetic elements (MGEs).

Occurrence, removal and risk evaluation of ibuprofen and acetaminophen in municipal wastewater treatment plants: A critical review

Jia-le Wu et al.

Summary: This study summarized the occurrence and removal efficiency of ibuprofen and acetaminophen in municipal wastewater treatment plants across 30 countries. The removal efficiencies of these two drugs ranged from 6.5% to 100% and 14.3% to 100% respectively. Due to the high concentrations in influent, the presence of acetaminophen and ibuprofen in effluent may have adverse effects on aquatic organisms, thus advanced treatment is necessary.

The effect of carbon-based copper nanocomposites on Microcystis aeruginosa and the movability of antibiotic resistance genes in urban water

Xiyan Ji et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of 20 mg/L of carbon-based copper nanocomposites can significantly alter the composition and abundance of microorganisms in urban water, promote flocculation of M. aeruginosa, and reduce the proportions of M. aeruginosa and Cyanophyta sp. It also showed a decrease in absolute abundance and proportions of ARGs mediated by plasmids, suggesting a weakening of ARGs' movability potential mediated by mobile genetic elements like plasmids.

A new insight into the ARG association with antibiotics and non-antibiotic agents-antibiotic resistance and toxicity

Shaojing Sun et al.

Summary: This study identified co-selection of resistance against antibiotics in urban sludge, with antibiotic resistance showing a positive correlation with highly toxic compounds. The co-occurrence analysis based on antibiotic concentration and ARG abundance was found to be ambiguous, while the close correlation between intI1 gene and certain compounds suggested a potential mediation in co-selection. The findings improve understanding of the co-selection between ARGs, antibiotics, and non-antibiotic agents, highlighting the importance of non-antibiotic agents in the global spread of antibiotic resistance.

The fate and behavior mechanism of antibiotic resistance genes and microbial communities in anaerobic reactors treating oxytetracycline manufacturing wastewater

Hong-Ying Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, two parallel-operated EGSB reactors were used to investigate the behavior of antibiotics resistance genes and mobile genetic elements in different environments. Results showed that anaerobic treatment process cannot efficiently reduce ARGs and may increase the risk of ARGs proliferation through the suppression of antibiotics resistance bacteria.

Implications for mitigation of antibiotic resistance: Differential response of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes to sludge fermentation coupled with thermal hydrolysis

Chen Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that thermal hydrolysis pretreatment can effectively remove antibiotic resistance genes in sewage sludge, but may increase extracellular ARGs. Intracellular ARGs were dominant during the acidogenic fermentation process, while extracellular ARGs were susceptible to biodegradation and had limited contribution to ARGs propagation.

Unraveling the impact and mechanism of antipyretic paracetamol on intergenera conjugative plasmid transfer

Yingchao Cui et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Paracetamol (PRC) can promote intergenera conjugative plasmid transfer, which leads to the spread of antibiotic resistance. The treatment of PRC induced changes in reactive oxygen species, SOS response, and cell membrane permeability of both donor and recipient strains. Transcriptome analysis revealed that PRC significantly upregulated the expression of genes related to cell membrane permeability and SOS response. Additionally, PRC also increased the expressions of conjugation related genes in donor strains.
