Electron transfer photochromism of Ln-based (Ln = Dy, Tb) coordinated polymers for reversibly switching off/on single-molecule magnetic behavior

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, photochromic Ln-based phosphonate coordinated polymers were synthesized, which exhibited regulable single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior at room temperature. The SMM behavior could be switched off by light irradiation and recovered by heat treatment, demonstrating a reversible on/off switch of SMMs through electron transfer photochromism.

Achieving large thermal hysteresis in an anthracene-based manganese(II) complex via photo-induced electron transfer

Ji-Xiang Hu et al.

Summary: Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is a significant challenge in material science. In this study, a series of isostructural chain complexes were synthesized using 9,10-anthracene dicarboxylic acid as a photoactive component. The Mn2+ analog with photogenerated diradicals demonstrated light-induced magnetic bistability with a remarkably wide thermal hysteresis of 177 K.

Guest-Driven Light-Induced Spin Change in an Azobenzene Loaded Metal-Organic Framework

Kai-Ping Xie et al.

Summary: This study reports an unprecedented guest-driven light-induced spin change in a Hofmann-type metal-organic framework, where the reversible trans-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene guest results in remarkable magnetic changes in a wide temperature range of 10-180 K. This finding not only establishes a new switching mechanism for SCO complexes, but also paves the way for the development of a new generation of photo-responsive magnetic materials.

Asymmetric Coordination Toward a Photoinduced Single-Chain Magnet Showing High Coercivity Values

Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: The production of photo-switchable molecular nanomagnets with substantial coercivity is challenging but essential for information storage and processing applications. This study demonstrates a cyanide-bridged chain generated by introducing photo-responsive spin-crossover units, leading to a 3d-based photoinduced single-chain magnet exhibiting pronounced hysteresis. Structural characterization revealed a distorted coordination environment of Fe-II ions upon the introduction of an asymmetric ligand, resulting in the observed magnetic properties.
