Expanding Chitosan Reticular Chemistry Using Multifunctional and Thermally Stable Phosphorus-Containing Dendrimers

Sara Blilid et al.

Summary: Chitosan, extracted from marine crustacean waste, is a versatile building block for functional nanomaterials. Traditional reticular chemistry using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker has limitations due to its toxicity and chemistry. In this study, we explored the use of phosphorus-containing dendrimers to cross-link chitosan, resulting in flexible and functional bioplastics. The cross-linking delayed degradation, increased char residue, and reduced heat release rate of the plastics. Furthermore, the transparent films could encapsulate Congo red dye and gold nanoparticles, expanding their applications as multifunctional sensors, flame retardants, and biofoulants.
