Pitting corrosion behavior and mechanism of 5083 aluminum alloy based on dry-wet cycle exposure

Ye Wan et al.

Summary: Electrochemical and surface analysis methods were employed to study the pitting susceptibility and propagation of 5083 aluminum alloy specimens under as-received and dry-wet cycle exposure conditions. It was found that dry-wet cycle exposure decreased the corrosion potential, increased the corrosion current density, pitting potential (E-p), and passivation range. The pitting corrosion behavior during the dry-wet cycle process depended on the exposure temperature and time. Higher temperature and longer exposure time led to reduced pitting percentage and corrosion altitude, as well as decreased microhardness of the corrosion products, thereby promoting the pitting sensitivity of AA5083. A potential pitting mechanism was proposed based on the morphology and microstructures of the corrosion products.

Chlorine-induced high-temperature corrosion characteristics of Ni-Cr alloy cladding layer and Ni-Cr-Mo alloy cladding layer

Xinyu Wang et al.

Summary: The corrosion properties of four nickel-based cladding layers under chlorine-induced high-temperature corrosion were evaluated using the thickness loss rate. The results show that increasing the Cr content alone does not improve corrosion resistance, but instead worsens internal corrosion. The effect of Mo on enhancing corrosion resistance in laser cladding technology is closely related to its content and distribution. Transverse penetration cracks tend to occur in NiO surrounded by NiCr2O4, while the presence of short rod-like NbO2 enhances the mechanical properties of the NiO layer and eliminates such cracks.

Summary: This study successfully manufactured an Al-Cu-based in-situ reinforced composite coating on an AlSi10Mg substrate by laser cladding. The results showed that the composite coating had a gradient distributed microstructure, higher microhardness, and better wear resistance. The main wear mechanisms of the composite coating were found to change from abrasive wear to adhesive wear with increasing loading condition at room temperature, and were adhesive wear and plastic flow at high temperatures. High-temperature corrosion behavior of C276 alloy, 1.4529 steel and laser-cladding 1.4529 coating under the synergistic action of deposited chloride salt and HCl-containing atmosphere

Jiaxuan Li et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior and mechanism of C276 alloy, 1.4529 steel (9 S) and its laser-cladding coating (9 C) in a simulated waste incineration environment were studied. Results showed that at 550 degrees C, 9 C and 9 S exhibited comparable corrosion resistance to C276 and were protected by a mixed product layer rich in Fe and Cr. A loose and porous product layer caused lower corrosion resistance in C276 than expected. At 700 degrees C, all three materials experienced severe high-temperature electrochemical corrosion and activated oxidation, forming Ni-rich micro-nano porous surface and multilayer corrosion products.

Microstructure evolution and cyclic deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy via electron beam melting during low cycle fatigue

Chengyan Bai et al.

Summary: The low cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy manufactured via electron beam melting (EBM) was studied. The relationship between fatigue property, internal stress and microstructure was established to understand the cyclic-deformation behavior and LCF life of EBM Ti-6Al-4 V alloy. It was found that the LCF life of EBM Ti-6Al-4 V is comparable to the wrought counterparts under low strains and higher than that of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4 V reported. Tension-compression asymmetry and cyclic softening behavior were observed at different strains, and the anisotropy of tension-compression increased with increasing strain due to the increase of back stress and the decrease of friction stress. The formation of sub-grain boundaries and fragmented beta phase reduced friction stress, resulting in cyclic softening.

Influence of laser cladding parameters on slurry erosion performance of NiCrSiBC+50WC claddings

Sarpreet Singh et al.

Summary: Laser cladding was used to deposit hard layers of NiCrSiBC + 50WC powder on SS410 steel. The laser cladding parameters significantly influenced the micro-hardness of the coatings, while the powder feed rate had a minimal effect. The NiCrSiBC + 50WC clad surfaces exhibited enhanced slurry erosion resistance due to their higher hardness. The main wear mechanisms observed in the slurry eroded clads were plastic deformation, micro-cutting, crater formation, and ploughing. A combination of high scanning speed, high laser beam power, and intermediate powder feed rate was found to be suitable for developing coatings with superior wear resistance.
