The formation of physician altruism

Summary: We study the formation of patient-regarding altruism in medical education. By analyzing experimental data from a large sample of 733 medical students in Germany, we find significant heterogeneity in altruistic preferences among medical students. Freshmen show the highest level of patient-regarding altruism, which declines for students in the middle stages of their studies and tends to increase again for last year students. We also find that female students and those with higher general altruism tend to have higher patient-regarding altruism. Altruistic medical students have prior practical experience in healthcare, lower income expectations, and a preference for surgery and pediatrics.

Altruism and Burnout: Long Hours in the Teaching Profession

Summary: This article explores the reasons why many public school teachers work more hours than required by contract and introduces a theoretical framework for understanding public-sector employees. Findings suggest that intrinsically motivated teachers are less likely to leave the public sector and that high levels of effort become a stronger predictor of altruism over time. Additionally, the relationship between work hours and burnout changes as teaching experience increases.

Constructing the Facets of Altruistic Behaviors (FAB) Scale

Summary: In this study, a 15-item self-report scale was developed to assess three different facets of altruistic behavioral traits: help-giving, moral courage, and peer punishment. The selection of items was done using Ant Colony Optimization procedures, and confirmatory factor analysis showed excellent fit. The scale was structure-validated in a second sample and showed full measurement and structural invariance. Correlations with economic game decisions were found in a pilot study, indicating potential applications of the scale.
