Control rod driven long-term load-follow operation in small modular reactor

Kibeom Park et al.

Summary: The need for extensive load following is increasing due to the potential coupling between Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and intermittent renewable energy sources. This study shows that a control rod driving algorithm based on core outlet temperature enables efficient load following operations. Additional control parameters like Axial Offset (AO) and Boron concentration change allow reactor control near the limit conditions. Simulations demonstrate successful load-following operations within the operating limit and improved efficiency with adjustment of control band of outlet temperature.

A dynamic hybrid protection scheme for on-site emergency power system operated through an integrated microgrid during station blackout in NPP

Subhakanta Khatua et al.

Summary: After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the use of renewable energy operated integrated microgrids in nuclear power plants to strengthen the power supply during station blackout has become popular. The emergency-SBO power system of the integrated microgrid is a bidirectional power system that causes significant variation in fault current. However, there is a need to provide a minimum protection scheme for the emergency-SBO power system to avoid unnecessary tripping of the safety power system, which is a challenging task. To address this issue, a dynamic hybrid protection scheme combining differential and adaptive overcurrent protection has been proposed and validated through simulation software and harmonics analysis. The superiority of this scheme for integrated microgrids has been established.

Analysis of depressurization ability for IRIS containment during SBLOCAs using RELAP5 and CONTEMPT

Mengqi Huang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a safety assessment framework that combines deterministic and probabilistic methods to evaluate the impact of small break LOCAs on the integrity of the IRIS reactor containment. By establishing reactor models, determining parameter distributions, and propagating uncertainties, the failure probability of the containment is assessed.

Operational Resilience of Nuclear-Renewable Integrated-Energy Microgrids

Bikash Poudel et al.

Summary: This paper discusses an operational scheme based on distributed control of flexible power assets to enhance the operational resilience of SMR-DER integrated-energy microgrids, in response to the increasing prevalence of natural disasters and cyberattacks. A framework is proposed to assess the operational resilience of SMR-DER microgrids, and its effectiveness is validated through simulation experiments.

Review of integration of small modular reactors in renewable energy microgrids

D. Michaelson et al.

Summary: Integration of renewable energy sources in microgrids can enhance system resilience and reduce carbon emissions, but the intermittent nature of renewables requires energy storage to compensate for supply-demand imbalances. Traditional energy storage can be costly, thus introducing new technologies like small modular reactors as alternatives to traditional power sources is feasible.
