Will global cobalt supply meet demand? The geological, mineral processing, production and geographic risk profile of cobalt

E. Savinova et al.

Summary: Cobalt production is crucial for supporting the global transition to a low-carbon economy, as it plays a vital role in energy storage and electrification initiatives. This article examines the key aspects of cobalt production, including global demand and supply, geological settings, mineral processing routes, and associated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks. The supply risk of cobalt is high, as it is primarily extracted as a by-product of copper and nickel production. Additionally, ESG risks add complexity to the development and operational stages. To ensure sustainable metal production, it is important to reduce supply risks and address the ESG dimensions of currently undeveloped ore sources.
