Microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties of YSZ thermal barrier coatings deposited by axial suspension plasma spraying

Olena Poliarus et al.

Summary: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are essential in turbine propulsion systems. The application of YSZ coatings deposited with atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) is limited due to their inability to withstand frequent thermomechanical loading. However, modifying the plasma spraying process by using nano-structured suspension instead of micrometric powders offers the highest improvement in properties and requires minimal changes in industry procedures.

Numerical and Experimental Study on the Deposition Mechanisms of Plasma Spraying on 7075 Aluminum Alloy

Yu Gu et al.

Summary: The deposition mechanisms of Cr2O3, Al2O3, and Al2O3-40%TiO2 spray coatings onto aluminum alloy substrates were analyzed in this study. The coating morphology, temperature, and stress fields were investigated. It was observed that the sputtering phenomenon and stress within the coating gradually disappeared when the substrate temperature and stress reached a certain level. The thermal effects of the Al2O3 coating were found to be the largest among the investigated materials, while the Cr2O3 and Al2O3-40%TiO2 coatings had relatively smaller thermal effects. The multiparticle deposition model accurately represented the deposition processes.

Oxidation Behaviors of the NiCrAlY Bond Coats in the Thermal Barrier Coatings under External Loads

Chunyu Cheng et al.

Summary: The oxidation behaviors of the NiCrAlY bond coats in the thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) under external loads were investigated through uniaxial tensile and compressive experiments in air at 900 degrees C for 100 h. The experimental results were explained by first-principles simulation. The oxidation rate of the NiCrAlY bond coat was accelerated by external stresses. Different thicknesses of thermally grown oxide (TGO) layers were observed in the NiCrAlY bond coat under different types of stress.

Relationship between microstructure and bonding strength of yttria-stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings

Can Chen et al.

Summary: Yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying, and their bonding strength was determined by the proportion of columnar grains and porosity. Higher proportion of columnar grains leads to higher bonding strength, while the presence of small grains reduces bonding strength. Additionally, both holes and cracks in pores linearly affect bonding strength, with holes having the greatest impact.

Investigating the in-flight droplets' atomization in suspension plasma-sprayed coating

E. Dalir et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional unsteady numerical model is used to study the atomization of droplets/particles in flight during suspension plasma spraying (SPS). The model incorporates electromagnetic fields, two-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian technique, and Kelvin-Helmholtz Rayleigh-Taylor breakup model to simulate droplets' interactions and atomization. The coefficients of the KHRT breakup model are modified for suspension atomization in the SPS process, with nine case studies conducted to investigate the effect of instabilities and liquid core length on atomization. The results show good agreement with existing data.

High-entropy (Y0.2 Gd0.2 Dy0.2 Er0.2 Yb0.2 )2Hf2O7 ceramic: A promising thermal barrier coating material

Longkang Cong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel high entropy hafnate (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 was synthesized and characterized for potential use as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material in gas turbines. The (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 demonstrated excellent phase stability, chemical compatibility with Al2O3, and lower thermal conductivity compared to other TBC materials. These results suggest that (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 is a promising candidate for the next generation TBC materials.
