Current trends of unsustainable plastic production and micro(nano) plastic pollution

Tony R. Walker et al.

Summary: Unsustainable plastic production, use and mismanagement have caused widespread plastic pollution and the accumulation of micro(nano)plastics in the environment, posing a threat to sustainability. Micro(nano)plastic pollution has global ecological impacts and contributes to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions. Despite existing strategies to combat plastic pollution, they are inadequate due to the ongoing increase in plastic production and waste generation. A more comprehensive approach is needed to address the issue and achieve reduction targets.

A Degradable Difunctional Initiator for ATRP That Responds to Hydrogen Peroxide

Lawrence Hill et al.

Summary: Mid-chain degradable polymers can be prepared using difunctional initiators that include triggers for the desired stimuli. However, there is limited research on preparing difunctional initiators that respond to oxidizing conditions. In this study, a difunctional initiator with an oxidizable trigger was synthesized, and its polymerization kinetics showed controlled behavior. The polymer synthesized using this initiator exhibited a significant decrease in molecular weight in the presence of hydrogen peroxide compared to a control polymer without a degradable linkage. The observed molecular weight decrease in both polymers was attributed to the cleavage of the difunctional initiator and hydrolysis of the ester pendent groups, resulting in an increase in polydispersity after oxidative degradation.
