An Enhanced High Q-Factor Resonance of Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum With All-Dielectric Metasurface Based on Multilayer Film Structures

Junjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method that utilizes dielectric surfaces to achieve perfect confinement of light and demonstrates the importance of quasi-bound states in this process. By breaking the symmetry of ellipsoidal table pairs, high-Q quasi-BIC resonance modes are achieved using asymmetric silicon nanoellipsoid surfaces. Furthermore, these quasi-BIC modes can be used to achieve a huge Goos-Hanchen shift enhancement and a very large group index for excellent slow-light effects.

Tunable dual quasi-bound states in continuum and electromagnetically induced transparency enabled by the broken material symmetry in all-dielectric compound gratings

Jiaqing Liu et al.

Summary: Dual quasi-bound states in continuum (quasi-BICs) enabled by broken geometric symmetry are designed in all-dielectric compound gratings, using the tunable material property of phase-change materials. The even and odd quasi-BICs are modulated by geometric and material asymmetries, respectively, and this effect is ensured by two different types of structural symmetries in the compound structure. Tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be achieved by modulating the material asymmetry. The compound gratings consisting of Sb2Se3 phase-change material are designed and verified through analytical calculations and numerical simulations.

Giant enhancement of the Goos-Hanchen shift assisted by merging bound states in the continuum

Shiwen Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of reflection-type merging BICs on the Goos-Hanchen shift (GH shift) and demonstrates a remarkable enhancement of the GH shift, exceeding five orders of wavelength. The study highlights that even minor fabrication imperfections can result in a significant change in the GH shift, which can serve as a means for detecting manufacturing defects. Furthermore, an ultrasensitive environmental refractive index sensor based on the enhanced GH shift by an isolated BIC is proposed.

Low-voltage electro-optic switching and modulation of second harmonic generation in lithium niobate resonant waveguide gratings assisted by quasi-BICs

Xin Li et al.

Summary: We investigate the low-voltage electro-optic switching and modulation of second harmonic generation in lithium niobate resonant waveguide gratings operating at quasi-bound states in the continuum. By applying an external voltage of 0.4 V, the transmission can be changed from near zero to 70% in the feasible nanostructure of the waveguide gratings. The tuning efficiency is up to 121 pm/V and 56 pm/V under TM and TE polarizations, respectively. In addition to linear transmission switching, the second harmonic generation from the waveguide gratings can also be effectively modulated by external voltages.

Dual-band refractive index sensor with cascaded asymmetric resonant compound grating based on bound states in the continuum

Xiuhong Liu et al.

Summary: We propose a cascaded asymmetric resonant compound grating (ARCG) for high-performance dual-band refractive index sensing. The physical mechanism of the sensor is investigated using a combination of temporal coupled-mode theory (TCMT) and ARCG eigenfrequency information, which is verified by rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA). The reflection spectra can be tailored by changing the key structural parameters. And by altering the grating strip spacing, a dual-band quasi-bound state in the continuum can be achieved. The simulation results show that the highest sensitivity of the dual-band sensor is 480.1 nm/RIU, and its figure of merit is 4.01 x 105. The proposed ARCG has potential application prospects for high-performance integrated sensors.

Enhanced beam shifts mediated by bound states in continuum

Sounak Sinha Biswas et al.

Summary: The study explores the effects of bound states in continuum (BIC) on the shifts of a finite beam with specific polarization incident at an arbitrary angle. A generic formalism is developed to analyze the interaction between the beam and a stratified medium with isotropic and homogeneous components. The results show that even a small deviation from the ideal BIC resonance can still lead to resonances with very high quality factors, resulting in giant shifts in both the Goos-Hanchen and Imbert-Fedorov effects. The study also reveals the occurrence of a satellite spot in the reflected beam due to destructive interference.

Brillouin zone folding driven bound states in the continuum

Wenhao Wang et al.

Summary: Non-radiative bound states in the continuum (BICs) can create resonant cavities with confined electromagnetic energy and high-quality (Q) factors. By folding all guided modes into the light cone through periodic perturbation, BZF-BICs with ultrahigh Q factors can be achieved in a large, tunable momentum space. Unlike conventional BICs, BZF-BICs show perturbation-dependent dramatic enhancement of the Q factor throughout the momentum space and are robust against structural disorders.

Dispersion-enabled control of photonic density of states in photonic hypercrystals

Bartosz Janaszek et al.

Summary: In this work, we explore the possibilities of manipulating photonic density of states (PDOS) in photonic hypercrystals (PHCs). Our analysis demonstrates the ability to achieve photonic bandgap for specific polarization of light and significant enhancement in broadband PDOS. We also introduce the concept of anomalous dispersion arising from effective resonance of the hyperbolic medium in the PHC structure, which can result in negative PDOS, similar to the mobility gap observed in electronic crystals. Furthermore, we show that employing PHC structures instead of standalone hyperbolic media enables more versatile electromagnetic responses, such as broadband perfect absorption with adjustable spectral range of operation.

Giant photonic spin Hall effect empowered by polarization-dependent quasibound states in the continuum in compound grating waveguide structures

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: In this paper, we theoretically propose a polarization-dependent bound state in the continuum (BIC) in a compound grating waveguide structure based on the selectable guided resonance at near-infrared wavelengths. By utilizing the unique resonant property and polarization-dependent property of the quasi-BIC, the transverse shift of the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) can be intensively enhanced to the order of hundreds of micrometers, and this enhancement is robust against the geometric parameters. Our work not only provides an all-dielectric platform to achieve giant PSHE, but also offers a viable approach to design high-performance PSHE-based optical devices.

Global phase diagram of bound states in the continuum

Summary: This study classifies different types of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic-crystal slabs and reveals the origin of these BICs. It shows that single-resonance parametric BICs are formed through the coupling of guided resonance and Fabry-Perot modes, while symmetry-protected BICs are formed through the coupling of degenerate guided resonance modes. A global phase diagram of BICs can be obtained based on this classification, and phase transitions can be observed when BICs are created or annihilated.

Nonlocality-driven switchable fast-slow light effect in hyperbolic metamaterials in epsilon-near-zero regime

V. B. Novikov et al.

Summary: The recent development of optics of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) has been driven by their intriguing optical properties, particularly their strong optical nonlocality. In this study, we demonstrate that in metal nanorod-based HMMs, nonlocality leads to fast and slow light effects in the propagation of femtosecond laser pulses in the spectral range near the HMM epsilon-near-zero regime. These effects can be switched by the angle of incidence and light wavelength. We explain that these observed dynamics stem from the zero-transmission points of HMM and phase singularities caused by the destructive interference between the main optical wave and the additional wave mediated by the spatial dispersion of light in the HMMs.
