Co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge using the combination of a thermal alkali pre-treatment and a two-stage anaerobic digestion system

Wonbae Lee et al.

Summary: A thermal alkali pre-treatment anaerobic digestion elutriated phased treatment (T-ADEPT) was developed by combining the thermal-alkali pre-treatment (TAP) with the anaerobic digestion elutriated phased treatment (ADEPT) for the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and dewatered sewage sludge. The proposed technique showed improved solubilization efficiency and methane yield compared to conventional anaerobic digestion processes.

A review on recent disposal of hazardous sewage sludge via anaerobic digestion and novel composting

Chin Seng Liew et al.

Summary: Low-cost methods such as vermicomposting and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have shown comparable performances to anaerobic digestion in terms of carbon recovery, nitrogen recovery, and mass reduction. However, anaerobic digestion excels in pathogen destruction due to its high operational temperature.

Anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source for sustainable microalgae cultivation: A way forward through waste valorization approach

Chi Cheng Chong et al.

Summary: Microalgae are considered high potential feedstocks for liquid fuels to meet the increasing global energy demand, but the high costs of nutrients can hinder commercialization. Using organic-rich anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source can improve economic viability and sustainability of microalgae production, while also reducing waste and reutilizing organic fractions. Proposed solutions such as digestate dilution, microalgae strain selection, and additional organics can address challenges related to nutrient availability and toxicity, providing future directions for research in cultivating microalgae.

Enriched sewage sludge from anaerobic pre-treatment in spurring valorization potential of black soldier fly larvae

Ratchaprapa Raksasat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of anaerobic digestion pre-treatment of sewage sludge on the growth of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) and the release of nutrients. The results showed that pre-treatment could disrupt the structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), releasing more nutrients and promoting larval growth. The conditions of pre-treatment and the quality of the sludge also had an impact on the final larval weight.
