Pulsating heat pipes: Critical review on different experimental techniques

Luca Pagliarini et al.

Summary: Pulsating heat pipes have attracted great interest due to their flexibility, heat transfer capability, and reliability. However, a complete understanding of their working behavior is still lacking, leading to a lack of established design techniques. This review critically examines experimental techniques and highlights a lack of standardization, hindering the identification of meaningful figures of merit for quantitative description and prediction of heat transfer performance.

Effects of oscillation amplitudes on heat transfer mechanisms of pulsating heat pipes

Chuljae Jung et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of oscillation amplitudes on heat transfer mechanisms of pulsating heat pipes were experimentally investigated. It was found that as the oscillation amplitude increases, the proportion of latent heat increases, leading to a decrease in thermal resistance.

Thermal characterization of a multi-turn pulsating heat pipe in microgravity conditions: Statistical approach to the local wall-to-fluid heat flux

Luca Pagliarini et al.

Summary: A Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP) was tested in microgravity conditions during the 67th Parabolic Flight Campaign, using a high-speed infrared camera to measure the temperature distribution of the external wall, and applying the Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP) solution to estimate local heat fluxes. A statistical approach was used to study the heat fluxes of the device, showing that it can provide similar information to traditional experimental methods.

Global and local heat transfer behaviour of a three-dimensional Pulsating Heat Pipe: combined effect of the heat load, orientation and condenser temperature

Luca Pagliarini et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional layouts of pulsating heat pipes are preferred for their gravity-independency and compactness. Tests show that the studied layout exhibits consistent equivalent thermal resistance under various orientations at high power input levels, indicating its independence from gravity effects.
