Observation of strong backscattering in valley-Hall photonic topological interface modes

Christian Anker Rosiek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the practical value of topological protection in reciprocal photonics. Measurements of propagation losses in valley-Hall topological waveguides in the slow-light regime show no evidence of topological protection against backscattering on structural defects. Light's unique properties support the development of photonic quantum technologies, optical interconnects, and novel sensors, but losses due to absorption or backscattering are a key limitation.

Direct quantification of topological protection in symmetry-protected photonic edge states at telecom wavelengths

Sonakshi Arora et al.

Summary: Topological on-chip photonics based on tailored photonic crystals that mimic quantum valley-Hall effects has gained interest for its potential in robust unidirectional transport of classical and quantum information. Experimental evaluation of topological photonic edge eigenstates using phase-resolved near-field optical microscopy demonstrates that protected edge states are two orders of magnitude more robust than modes of conventional photonic crystal waveguides, offering potential for error-free photonic quantum networks in integrated photonics.

Topological edge states in an all-dielectric terahertz photonic crystal

Koijam Monika Devi et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the robustness of topological edge states in an all-dielectric photonic crystal slab in the terahertz (THz) frequency domain. Topological edge states are achieved in the VPC structure when domain walls are formed by larger air holes, showing that the topological transport of THz becomes more robust with increasing asymmetry in the VPC structure. The findings are relevant for the realization of low-loss waveguides for 6G communication and other integrated photonic devices.

Summary: Topological photonics, with the introduction of valleys as an important degree of freedom, has shown promising progress in designing and constructing photonic topological phases. The unique valley-contrasting physics allows for robust light propagation and efficient out-coupling of topological states, without the need for magnetic materials or complex construction of photonic pseudospin. This technology can be integrated on compact photonic platforms for future applications.
