Pressure-induced superconductivity at 32 K in MoB2

Cuiying Pei et al.

Summary: The discovery of superconductivity up to 32K in MoB2 under pressure is reported, highlighting the roles of transitional metals in high-Tc superconductors. Despite the exploration of approximately 100 binary borides, only a few of them exhibit relatively low Tc superconductivity. The high Tc of 32K in MoB2 is well explained by theoretical calculations based on electron-phonon coupling, with the coupling between Mo's d electrons and out-of-plane Mo-phonon modes being the main driving force. This study provides insights into the exploration of high-Tc superconductors in transition metal borides.

Stabilization and superconductivity of AlB2-type nonstoichiometric molybdenum diboride by Sc doping

Wuzhang Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports the structural and physical properties of a molybdenum diboride material prepared by arc melting method. The material is found to exhibit superconductivity in the AlB2-type phase, and the superconducting transition temperature is influenced by the electron-phonon interaction.

Creating superconductivity in WB2 through pressure-induced metastable planar defects

J. Lim et al.

Summary: High-pressure electrical resistivity measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that superconductivity can be induced in ultra-hard WB2 during compression, originating from the formation of metastable stacking faults and twin boundaries. The appearance of superconductivity is not accompanied by a structural transition, but instead correlated with the formation and percolation of mechanically-induced stacking faults and twin boundaries, as confirmed by synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements.

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB2 stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

A. C. Hire et al.

Summary: Recently, it was discovered that MoB2 exhibits superconductivity at elevated pressures with a critical temperature as high as 32 K. This superconductivity is suggested to emerge from a pressure-induced structural transition to an MgB2-like structure. This finding implies that high Tc values are not limited to MgB2 and other diborides with a similar structure may also exhibit similarly high Tc values. In this paper, density functional theory calculations and experimental measurements confirm this hypothesis.

MoB2 under pressure: Superconducting Mo enhanced by boron

Yundi Quan et al.

Summary: The discovery of MoB2 as a phonon-mediated superconductor under pressure sheds light on the electron-phonon coupling in intermetallic compounds. Strong coupling provided by Mo, along with weaker coupling to B, enhances T-c and offers insights into designing higher-T-c materials with a cooperative approach of heavy and light atoms. This new high-T-c paradigm emphasizes the importance of studying and engineering larger ionic scattering matrix elements.
