Scaling of Average Avalanche Shapes for Acoustic Emission during Jerky Motion of Single Twin Boundary in Single-Crystalline Ni2MnGa

Laszlo Z. Toth et al.

Summary: The temporal average shapes of crackling noise avalanches have self-similar behavior and can be scaled together using a universal scaling function. There are also universal scaling relations between the avalanche parameters. By normalizing the theoretically predicted average U(t) function with the amplitude and rising time, a universal function can be obtained for acoustic emission avalanches.

Platinum nanoparticle compression: Combining in situ TEM and atomistic modeling

Ingrid M. Padilla Espinosa et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of small platinum nanoparticles was investigated through in situ compression experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The experimental results, obtained using a nanomanipulator and a modified mechanical tester, showed high-resolution measurements of load and particle morphology. Molecular dynamics simulations provided complementary measurements and atomic resolution of dislocations. The critical resolved shear stress for failure was found to be comparable between the experimental and simulation results. This study demonstrated the potential of combining atomistic simulations and in situ experiments to understand the behavior of metal nanoparticles under compression.

Dislocation avalanches are like earthquakes on the micron scale

Peter Dusan Ispanovity et al.

Summary: The authors reveal similarities between the intermittent deformation process in metallic microsamples and earthquakes by analyzing the emitted elastic waves. The dislocation motion in micropillars is found to resemble a stick-slip process, with local strain bursts of scale-free size distribution. The study also uncovers a two-level structure of plastic events in the acoustic emission data.

The spatiotemporal coupling in delay-coordinates dynamic mode decomposition

Emil Bronstein et al.

Summary: Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is a leading tool for equation-free analysis of high-dimensional dynamical systems. In delay-coordinates DMD, temporal and spatial information are intertwined, and a new method based on spatiotemporal coupling is proposed for component selection, leading to a compact reduced-order representation of observations.

Real-time monitoring dislocations, martensitic transformations and detwinning in stainless steel: Statistical analysis and machine learning

Yan Chen et al.

Summary: Acoustic emission of 316L stainless steel with low Ni content exhibits three simultaneous avalanche processes during tension, including dislocation movement, martensitic transformations, and detwinning/twinning. Different energy exponents of the avalanches can distinguish between these processes, with dislocation movement showing slower decay and longer avalanche durations compared to martensitic transformations and detwinning/twinning. Statistical analysis combined with Convolutional Neural Network calculations provides an accurate and straightforward method for online, non-destructive avalanche monitoring of strain-induced martensitic transformations in 316L steel under high strain.

The duration-energy-size enigma for acoustic emission

Blai Casals et al.

Summary: Acoustic emission (AE) measurements of avalanches in different systems show discrepancies with model predictions due to details of the AE measurements, such as the initial acoustic strain signal being modified by acoustic wave propagation. Simple model simulations demonstrate that typical avalanches follow observed AE results, with a specific probability distribution and characteristic shape. Additionally, the relationship between avalanche size and maximum AE avalanche amplitude deviates from the prediction of mean field theory.

The impact of alloying on defect-free nanoparticles exhibiting softer but tougher behavior

Anuj Bisht et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of alloying on Ni nanoparticles, revealing that alloying can reduce the ultimate strength of the nanoparticles due to solute-induced local spatial variations of the resolved shear stress leading to premature dislocation nucleation. This counter-intuitive solution-softening effect makes the deformation of the particles require more work, increasing their toughness and presenting alloy nanoparticles as promising candidates for applications.

Tracking Twin Boundary Jerky Motion at Nanometer and Microsecond Scales

Emil Bronstein et al.

Summary: The study investigates the jerky motion of twin boundaries in the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni-Mn-Ga through simultaneous measurements of stress and magnetic emissions. It reveals a linear relationship between ME voltage and volumes exhibiting twinning transformation during abrupt avalanche events. The analysis shows that the distributions of ME avalanches follow power laws with exponential truncations, with cutoff values relating to physical characteristics of the problem. The observation suggests that avalanches during slow rate twin boundary motion and velocity changes observed in high rate tests represent the same behavior and can be described by the same theory.

Size and shape effects on the strength of platinum nanoparticles

J. Zimmerman et al.

Summary: The compressive strength of Pt nanoparticles shows a size effect, with smaller particles achieving the highest strength, and the particle shape (expressed by the ratio of top facet to projected diameter) also affects strength. The results suggest that Pt nanoparticles have lower strength normalized by shear modulus compared to other face-centered cubic metals.
