High propensity of membrane fouling and the underlying mechanisms in a membrane bioreactor during occurrence of sludge bulking

Mengfei Wu et al.

Summary: This study compared the fouling behaviors of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) operated at normal and sludge bulking stages, and explored the different mechanisms behind these behaviors. The results showed that the MBR could be stably operated for about 60 days without membrane cleaning in the normal stage, while daily membrane cleaning was required in the sludge bulking stage. Further characterizations revealed that the bulking sludge had lower dewaterability, smaller particle size, higher fractal dimension, higher viscosity, abundant filamentous bacteria, and different types of extracellular polymer substances (EPS). It was suggested that microbial community transition was responsible for the occurrence of sludge bulking, which in turn affected membrane fouling. Based on these findings, it was proposed that providing extra force to offset a chemical potential gap caused by foulant layer structure transition during sludge bulking is necessary to sustain filtration and prevent extremely high specific filtration resistance (SFR).

Anaerobic-anoxic-oxic biological treatment of high-strength, highly recalcitrant polyphenylene sulfide wastewater

Hui Guo et al.

Summary: This paper presents an integrated anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) treatment scheme for highly problematic wastewater from the production of PPS and its composite chemicals. The A2O process, utilizing anaerobic granular sludge blanket (GSB) and anoxic-oxic (AO) reactor, effectively removes COD, TKN, NH3, and S2 from the wastewater to meet the regulatory limits. With proper acclimation and design, the integrated A2O scheme offers a resilient and robust treatment solution for high-strength recalcitrant PPS wastewater.

Highly selective removal of Technetium-99 using imidazolium-based macroporous anion exchange resins

Tingwei Hu et al.

Summary: A N-methyl-imidazolium modified macroporous anion exchange resin (PMiMCl) was developed for the highly selective removal of 99TcO4- from nuclear wastewater. The resin showed high stability and adsorption capacity in a wide pH range, as well as high removal efficiency even in the presence of competing anions. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the strong interaction between the imidazole cation in the resin and 99TcO4- anion contributed to its high selectivity.

Removal of nutrients from WWTP effluent by an algae-mussel trophic cascade

Tom V. van der Meer et al.

Summary: New treatment steps are needed to remove nutrients from WWTP effluents and prevent eutrophication. Algae can be used, but removing algal biomass remains challenging. Using dreissenid mussels to filter effluent-grown algae showed efficient results, with 99% removal of P and N and 94% removal of suspended algae. This research suggests that an algae-mussel cascade could be an alternative solution for reducing nutrient concentrations in WWTP effluent.

Adsorptive removal of Zn, Fe, and Pb from Zn dominant simulated industrial wastewater solution using polyvinyl alcohol grafted chitosan variant resins

Prabhat Kumar Patel et al.

Summary: The article investigates the effectiveness of synthesized chitosan polyvinyl alcohol derivatives for cyclic multi-heavy metal removal. The derivative resin combines the advantages of chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol for removing multi-heavy metals from Zn dominant simulated industrial wastewater. FTIR and XRD results confirm a strong interaction between PVA and chitosan. Batch adsorption studies examine different adsorbent-adsorbate ratios, contact periods, and initial concentrations to determine optimal conditions. The high CSPVA derivative resin is found to be highly efficient and useful for removing Zn, Fe, and Pb from wastewater. The study provides confidence in the relevance of the resin for treating industrial multi-heavy metal containing wastewater systems.

Sungwon Kang et al.

Summary: A high-performance ammonium adsorbent was prepared by immobilizing copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) on a weakly acidic cation exchange resin (WAC) using a facile synthesis method. The synthesized CuHCF-based adsorbent exhibited good physicochemical properties and showed efficient adsorption of NH4+ ions. The adsorption process was found to be chemisorption and followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The WAC-CuHCF adsorbent also demonstrated regeneration capability and can be potentially used for wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Application of fluorescence spectra and molecular weight analysis in the identification of algal organic matter-based disinfection by-product precursors

Xinyi Wang et al.

Summary: Algal organic matter (AOM) can negatively affect the efficiency of disinfectants and lead to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the disinfection process. Incompatibility in conventional pretreatment methods of algal-laden water can result in the release of AOM. This study aims to observe the generation of AOM and its conversion to DBPs during pretreatment. Simulation experiments were conducted in deionized water and source water to analyze the characteristics of DBPs formed from extracellular organic matter (EOM) and intracellular organic matter (IOM) during chlorination and powdered activated carbon (PAC) treatment.

Effect of bromide on molecular transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter during ozonation, UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate, and UV/chlorine treatments

Bingliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used FT-ICR-MS to investigate the impact of bromide on the overall molecular transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) and the formation of unknown halogenated byproducts (X-BPs) during different oxidation processes. The presence of additional bromide led to a slight decrease in dEfOM oxygenation and a slight increase in the number of unknown brominated byproducts (BrBPs) in various oxidation processes, with the largest increment observed in the UV/Cl process. The study also found that the additional bromide did not significantly increase the concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) in most treatments, except for a significant decrease during UV/Cl treatment.
