Antioxidant, phytochemical, and therapeutic properties of medicinal plants: a review

Onyenibe Sarah Nwozo et al.

Summary: Oxidation is an important part of aerobic processes, involving the transfer of electrons or hydrogen through chemical reactions leading to the production of free radicals. These highly reactive radicals cause cellular damage. The etiology of many diseases has been linked to excessive free radical generation, resulting in oxidative stress. Therefore, research has focused on plants that provide natural antioxidants to combat the harmful effects of free radicals.

Risk-of-bias VISualization (robvis): An R package and Shiny web app for visualizing risk-of-bias assessments

Luke A. McGuinness et al.

Summary: Despite the availability of numerous software options for evidence synthesis, there is currently no universal tool for generating figures to display and explore risk-of-bias assessments. However, tools such as the R programming environment and Shiny have made it easy to create new tools for producing evidence syntheses. The new tool robvis facilitates the rapid production of publication-quality risk-of-bias assessment figures and is available as an R package and web app.

Dietary patterns and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation: A systematic review of observational and intervention studies

Krasimira Aleksandrova et al.

Summary: This review of observational studies and intervention trials in the past five years found that plant-based dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean and DASH diet, were associated with lower levels of oxidative stress and inflammation. On the other hand, western and fast food diets were positively associated with higher levels of oxidative stress and inflammation. Further large-scale intervention trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Redox changes in obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes

Summary: Life is defined as an instantaneous encounter of circulating matter and flowing energy, and the relationship between redox biology and metabolism forms a dynamic balance in health, but disruption can lead to disease. The rising prevalence of metabolic diseases presents challenges in understanding, diagnosing, and treating them, emphasizing the need for research on novel redox-metabolic biomarkers.

Summary: Living species are constantly exposed to oxidants, leading to oxidative stress and disease. The induction of oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between radical species and antioxidant defense systems, which can damage cellular biomolecules.

Lifestyle medicine: A positive approach to stemming the tide of non-communicable diseases in South Africa

Dave R. Glass

Summary: Non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of death globally, with conventional medicine focusing on pharmaceutical and surgical interventions to manage them while also recognizing the importance of lifestyle changes. Therefore, practical lifestyle medicine interventions need to be integrated into medical education and consultations to have a greater impact. The launch of the South African Lifestyle Medicine Association is aimed at facilitating this process.

Potential Health Benefits of Plant Food-Derived Bioactive Components: An Overview

Mrinal Samtiya et al.

Summary: Plant foods are consumed globally for their high energy density and nutritional value, with their consumption rising due to metabolic disorders associated with non-vegetarian diets. The bioactive compounds in plant foods have been shown to have health-promoting properties, benefiting conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. These components also possess antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, contributing to their ability to mitigate the impact of various human diseases.

Dietary Regulation of Oxidative Stress in Chronic Metabolic Diseases

Shuai Jiang et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants, leading to molecular damage and disruption of redox signaling. A healthy diet can regulate oxidative stress, maintain cellular and tissue homeostasis, and prevent inflammation and chronic metabolic diseases.
