Role of Al Distribution in CO2 Adsorption Capacity in RHO Zeolites

Eddy Dib et al.

Summary: Using solid-state 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), this study demonstrates that the distribution of aluminum within the framework of Na,Cs-RHO type zeolites plays a crucial role in determining CO2 adsorption capacity and structural flexibility. The flexibility of the zeolite framework is not solely dependent on the type of cation loading, but also on the distribution of Si species and pore aperture shape.

Altering the Atomic Order in Nanosized CHA Zeolites by Postsynthetic Silylation Treatment

Sajjad Ghojavand et al.

Summary: This study presents a new post-synthetic hydrothermal approach for simultaneous dealumination and silylation of zeolite nanocrystals. By adjusting the acidity and concentration of the silica modifier during post-synthesis treatment, nanosized chabazite (CHA) type zeolite with Si/Al ratios up to 4 can be obtained. The effect of acidity during the post-synthetic silylation treatment at different pH values is investigated. The approach reported here can be applied to fine-tune the structural features of other zeolite types.

Visualizing the Flexibility of RHO Nanozeolite: Experiment and Modeling

Edwin B. Clatworthy et al.

Summary: This study directly visualizes the structural flexibility of a high-aluminum nano-sized RHO zeolite using in situ TEM for the first time. Variable temperature experiments observe the physical expansion of nanocrystals in response to changes in guest-molecule chemistry and temperature. Operando FTIR spectroscopy complements the observations and verifies the nature of adsorbed CO2 and structural changes at high temperatures. Quantum chemical modeling substantiates the effect of cation mobility and CO2 on the flexibility behavior of the structure. The results demonstrate the combined influences of temperature and CO2 on the structural flexibility consistent with experimental observations.

Theoretical isotherm equation for adsorption-induced structural transition on flexible metal-organic frameworks

Shotaro Hiraide et al.

Summary: Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with adsorption-induced structural transitions have significant advantages in industrial applications. However, there is currently no theoretical equation available to accurately describe the S-shaped adsorption isotherms of flexible MOFs. In this study, a theoretical equation based on statistical mechanics is derived as a standard for structural transition type adsorption isotherms, and its versatility is demonstrated through multiple examples.

Interplay between alkali-metal cations and silanol sites in nanosized CHA zeolite and implications for CO2 adsorption

Sajjad Ghojavand et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of silanols and their influence on CO2 adsorption in nanosized chabazite (CHA) through post-synthetic ion exchange. By using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the researchers show significant changes in the silanols of CHA nanozeolite after ion exchange, and how this affects CO2 adsorption. The study also reveals that altering the ratio of extra-framework cations in CHA zeolites can change the population of silanols.

Gating effect for gas adsorption in microporous materials-mechanisms and applications

Kaifei Chen et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, various microporous materials have been developed as effective gas adsorbents. The regulation of pore accessibility in microporous materials has been extensively studied to control the admission and release of guest molecules. This review focuses on the mechanisms of the gating effect, which is caused by structural variations induced by host-guest interactions or external stimuli. The temperature-regulated gating effect is emphasized, as it plays a key role in regulating guest admission. Molecular simulations can provide insight into the atomic-scale gate opening/closing transitions and enable the construction of quantitative models for describing gated adsorption behavior. The gating effect in porous materials has been widely applied in gas separation and shows great potential for gas storage and sensing applications.

In situ imaging of the sorption-induced subcell topological flexibility of a rigid zeolite framework

Hao Xiong et al.

Summary: The crystallographic pore sizes of zeolites are smaller than previously inferred, due to the flexible variation in zeolite opening pores. In the study, it was found that the topologically soft silicon-oxygen-silicon hinges cause deformation of the zeolite channels, but this deformation does not affect the stability and rigidity of the overall unit cell.

Interplay of Structure and Dynamics in Lithium/Ionic Liquid Electrolytes: Experiment and Molecular Simulation

Patrick Judeinstein et al.

Summary: The addition of lithium ions in ionic-liquid-based electrolytes promotes nanostructuring of the liquid, leading to the appearance of a pronounced scattering prepeak in X-ray scattering. This nanoscale ordering results in a significant decrease in molecular mobility and ionic conductivity. The association of Li+ cations with four BF4- anions and long ion pairing times severely hinder the Li+ transport properties.

Maarten C. Verbraeken et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how a combination of experimental characterization and modeling can be used to understand non-trivial equilibrium and kinetic adsorption behavior in a flexible zeolite. By studying (Na, TEA)-ZSM-25 and utilizing diffraction data, lattice fluid modeling, and dynamic column experiments, a plausible mechanism for CO2 adsorption and transport in this material was obtained. It is the first study to measure and model the changing kinetics due to adsorption induced framework flexibility.
