Catalytic Syntheses of Degradable Polymers via Ring-Opening Metathesis Copolymerization Using Vinyl Ethers as Chain Transfer Agents

Ankita Mandal et al.

Summary: In this study, commercially available Vince lactam and its derivatives were copolymerized with 2,3-dihydrofuran (DHF) in a living fashion based on the unique reactivity of Ru Fischer carbene. The resulting copolymers showed complete degradation into small molecules under mildly acidic conditions, indicating uniform incorporation of the DHF units throughout the polymer backbone. The high metathesis activity and regioselectivity of vinyl ethers were further exploited for the synthesis of degradable copolymers using vinyl ethers as effective chain transfer agents. This cost-effective and environmentally friendly synthesis of degradable polymers has potential applications in biomedical and environmental fields.

Expedient synthesis and ring-opening metathesis polymerization of pyridinonorbornenes

Sarah N. Hancock et al.

Summary: Pyridine-containing polymers have great potential in various applications, but the innate Lewis basicity hampers living polymerization catalyzed by transition-metal complexes. In this study, well-controlled chain-growth ring-opening metathesis polymerization was achieved by careful structural design of pyridinonorbornene monomers. Polypyridinonorbornenes exhibited high T-g and T-d, which is promising for high-temperature applications. Investigation of the polymerization kinetics and reactivity of the chain ends revealed the influence of nitrogen coordination on the chain-growth mechanism.

Impact of Macromonomer Molar Mass and Feed Composition on Branch Distributions in Model Graft Copolymerizations

Aristotelis Zografos et al.

Summary: Graft polymers play a versatile role in material applications, and understanding the impact of parameters such as grafting density and degree of polymerization on polymer properties is crucial for tuning material performance. By controlling the macromonomer degree of polymerization and initial fraction in the feed, changes can be made to the copolymerization reactivity ratios and the side-chain distribution along a graft polymer backbone. These findings provide essential information for manipulating the side-chain distribution while maintaining synthetic control over graft-through copolymerizations.

Topological Effect on Macromonomer Polymerization

Ning Ren et al.

Summary: The larger size of macromonomers compared to regular monomers presents new synthetic challenges and requires a deeper investigation into polymerization mechanisms. The topological effect significantly affects the kinetics and mechanisms of macromonomer polymerization. The formation of a brush segment hinders propagation, resulting in a molecular weight dependence of the propagation rate. Copolymerization with other monomers can make the propagation rate independent of the macromonomers' molecular weight again.
