Regional differences and heterogeneity of construction and demolition waste with economic growth: evidence from China

Zhenshuang Wang et al.

Summary: The reduction of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) is crucial for the sustainable development of the construction industry. This study examined the temporal and spatial evolution, heterogeneity with economic growth, and driving factors of C&DW generation in 30 provinces in China from 2007 to 2018. The results showed regional differences in C&DW generation, with higher rates in the East and South compared to the West and North. The distribution pattern of C&DW generation shifted from northeast-southwest to due north-due south. Economic growth was found to be a significant factor contributing to C&DW generation, and the impact of C&DW generation shifted from being solely driven by the economy to being guided by both the economy and environmental protection. The interaction of different factors had a greater impact on the spatial distribution of C&DW generation than individual factors alone.

Differentiated subsidy mechanism for promoting construction and demolition waste recycling

Hongping Yuan et al.

Summary: Low acceptance and inefficient policies hinder C&D waste recycling. This study develops a differentiated subsidy mechanism to improve subsidy efficiency in the cooperation market. Consumer quality perceptions should be considered, and higher perceptions can partially replace government subsidies.

The potential for carbon reduction in construction waste sorting: A dynamic simulation

Jingkuang Liu et al.

Summary: Energy savings and emission reductions in the construction industry are vital for China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. This study uses a system dynamics model to explore the relationship among factors affecting carbon emissions in construction and demolition waste (C&DW) management and investigates the effects of different policies. The findings suggest that subsidies and carbon taxes can significantly influence contractors' choices of sorting modes, leading to reduced carbon emissions in C&DW treatment.

Pollution characteristics and risk assessment of heavy metals in the soil of a construction waste landfill site

Gaofeng Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pollution characteristics and ecological risks of eight heavy metals in the soils of an unofficial construction waste landfill site in Beijing. The results show that the landfill pollutes the external soil environment, with Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu as the characteristic pollutants. The pollution is highest in internal soils, followed by bottom soils and boundary soils.

The impact of migration background, ethnicity and social network dispersion on air and car travel in the UK

Giulio Mattioli et al.

Summary: The study finds that individuals with first-generation migration background tend to have lower car mileage but higher levels of air travel. Conversely, this effect is less pronounced or absent for more recent migrants and second- or third-generation migrants. Additionally, spatially dispersed social networks are positively associated with both air and car travel, and the relationship between migration background and air travel can be partly explained by social network dispersion.

A dissipative structure theory-based investigation of a construction and demolition waste minimization system in China

Hongping Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates China's C&D waste minimization system and finds that it is not a dissipative structure, thus unable to form a macroscopic stable and ordered structure through self-organization. Suggestions are proposed to promote the development of the system towards a dissipative structure for more orderly and coordinated system development.

Explore potential barriers of applying circular economy in construction and demolition waste recycling

Jingkuang Liu et al.

Summary: This study used social network analysis to explore potential barriers, key stages, and core cluster positions of construction and demolition waste recycling in the circular economy model in Guangzhou. The findings suggest a lack of effective management mechanisms, inadequate government incentives and policies, insufficient public education, and a lacking legal framework for C&DW management are key barriers. The key stage identified is the promotion and application of recycled products in advancing the circular economy initiatives in the construction industry.

An agent-based model approach for urban demolition waste quantification and a management framework for stakeholders

Zhikun Ding et al.

Summary: This study developed an agent-based model to estimate the total volume of demolition waste and the amount of waste generated at each disposal stage in Shenzhen, China, revealing the greater potential of deconstruction method in reducing waste generation. However, the change in attitude towards demolition method is slow, and reliance on demolition companies' attitude change alone is insufficient for improving waste management performance. An optimized management framework involving related stakeholders is needed for better waste management.

Construction waste modelling for residential construction projects in New Zealand to enhance design outcomes

Niluka Domingo et al.

Summary: Construction waste generation is a significant issue globally, with New Zealand's construction industry responsible for a large portion of landfill waste. This study analyzed waste quantities from residential buildings to quantify waste generation rate and identified the impact of design decisions on waste generation, which can be applicable to timber-framed homes overseas.
