Identifying and interpreting regional signals in tree-ring based reconstructions of snow avalanche activity in the Goms valley (Swiss Alps)

A. Favillier et al.

Summary: One purpose of dendrogeomorphic studies is to provide reconstructions of mass movements and detect climate-induced trends. Regional chronologies aggregating data from different sites are often needed to overcome local-scale specificities and extract a common signal. However, the compilation of such chronologies is scarce and there is no consensus on the methods to be used. This article introduces a methodological approach to extract common avalanche signals, but highlights the challenges and limitations in identifying a clear climatic control of snow avalanche activity.

Climate drivers of large magnitude snow avalanche years in the US northern Rocky Mountains

Erich H. Peitzsch et al.

Summary: The study found that historically, large magnitude avalanche years were associated with stormy winters and positive snowpack anomalies, while recent decades have been increasingly influenced by warmer temperatures and shallow snowpack. The amount of snowpack is directly related to avalanche probability, and with climate warming causing reductions in snowpack, there has been a decline in large magnitude avalanche probability.

A regional spatiotemporal analysis of large magnitude snow avalanches using tree rings

Erich Peitzsch et al.

Summary: The study utilized dendrochronological methods to investigate the historical patterns of large magnitude avalanches in the northern Rocky Mountains region of the United States. Results showed variations in avalanche activity across different time periods and spatial scales, highlighting the importance of sample size, scale, and spatial extent in deriving a regional chronology of large magnitude avalanche events from tree-ring records.
