Estimating global production and supply costs for green hydrogen and hydrogen-based green energy commodities

Michael Moritz et al.

Summary: Green energy commodities, such as hydrogen, are crucial in decarbonizing the global energy system. This study examines the production costs and potentials of hydrogen-based energy commodities in various countries, highlighting the dominance of production costs for liquid or easily liquefiable commodities and transport costs for gaseous commodities. Importing green ammonia could be a cost-effective option for Germany, with Norway being the cheapest supplier. The existence of a pan-European hydrogen pipeline grid could make ammonia production using imported hydrogen from Spain a viable option.

Addressing sustainable energy intermittence for green ammonia production

Houssam Bouaboula et al.

Summary: This study aims to optimize the design and operation of a pilot-scale green ammonia plant powered by renewable energy sources. A novel Techno-Economic (TE) modeling approach is proposed to address the intermittency and unpredictability of renewable energy sources. By considering different site locations with consistent yearly meteorological data and using an original Energy Management Strategy (EMS), the TE model efficiently reduces fluctuation and increases energy production. The results show that the implemented EMS leads to a significant increase in the HB Load Factor (LF) and a reduction in the Levelized Cost of Ammonia (LCOA). The PV/Battery scenario is found to be the most optimal with a projected potential cost reduction in the future.

Techno-economic assessment of low-carbon hydrogen export from Western Canada to Eastern Canada, the USA, the Asia-Pacific, and Europe

Ayodeji Okunlola et al.

Summary: This study assesses the cost of exporting hydrogen from Canada to the Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America. The findings show that the cost of delivering hydrogen to inland destinations in North America ranges from CAD$4.81/kg to CAD$6.03/kg, to the Asia-Pacific from CAD$6.65/kg to CAD$6.99/kg, and at least CAD$8.14/kg for exports to Europe. Blending hydrogen in existing natural gas pipelines reduces costs by 17%, and exporting ammonia to the Asia-Pacific saves 28% compared to shipping liquid hydrogen.
