Internalizing and externalizing problems on the age of e-cigarette initiation in youth: Findings from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH), 2013-2017

Summary: Previous research has shown a link between internalizing and externalizing problems in youth and e-cigarette use. This study used data from Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health to estimate the age at which youth with internalizing and externalizing problems start using e-cigarettes and report past 30-day use. The findings suggest that youth with high internalizing and externalizing problems have an increased risk of initiating e-cigarette use at earlier ages and reporting past 30-day use earlier. It is important to screen and provide resources to these youth to prevent e-cigarette use.
