Variability and trends of the total cloud cover over Italy (1951-2018)

Veronica Manara et al.

Summary: This study presents a quality-checked and homogenised dataset of total cloud cover (TCC) series over Italy from 1951 to 2018, and discusses the variability and trends of the regional series. The results show that convection induced by solar radiation plays a significant role, especially at medium and high elevations and in summer. The annual cycle exhibits a strong minimum in July and a maximum during winter for southern Italy, with more complex behavior and differences between low and high elevations in northern Italy. The TCC series of both seasons and years show a significant negative trend over the entire period, mainly attributed to the period from 1951 to 1990. Despite small differences between northern and southern Italy, both regions exhibit coherent behavior in long-term trends and decadal variability, indicating that the variability and trends of Italian TCC records are more related to large-scale factors rather than local-scale changes. Comparison with sea level pressure and 500 hPa geopotential height data suggests that large-scale atmospheric circulation plays a significant role in the Italian TCC records. Finally, the new TCC dataset shows that the long-term evolution of sunshine duration and surface solar radiation in Italy is only partially influenced by changes in TCC.

Integrating culture-based and molecular methods provides an improved assessment of microbial quality in a coastal lagoon

Marco Basili et al.

Summary: Faecal pollution in aquatic environments is a global concern. In this study, three methods (culture-based, qPCR, and HTS) were compared to assess contamination levels. The results showed higher contamination in the lagoon compared to the sea, and higher contamination in sediments compared to water. Combining at least two methods provided more accurate information on contamination. This study suggests the need to move beyond traditional methods and incorporate HTS analysis in routine monitoring.

Relationship between Engraulis japonicus Resources and Environmental Factors Based on Multi-Model Comparison in Offshore Waters of Southern Zhejiang, China

Wen Ma et al.

Summary: Based on survey data in offshore waters of southern Zhejiang, China, this study accurately explored the relationship between the density of Engraulis japonicus and environmental factors by comparing different models. The results showed that water temperature and salinity were important factors affecting the distribution of E. japonicus, and the resource density decreased with increasing water temperature.

Long-term dynamics of annual and seasonal physical and biogeochemical properties: Role of minor river discharges in the North-western Adriatic coast

Fabio Ricci et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the dynamics of physical and biogeochemical properties in a temperate coastal area in the north-western Adriatic Sea. The results showed that the inputs from minor rivers and ecological processes played a role in the interannual and seasonal biogeochemical dynamics. The study also found a trend towards more oligotrophic conditions, mainly due to reduced phosphate and nitrate loadings from the minor rivers and increased freshwater discharges.

Hydrodynamic modelling in marginal and coastal seas-The case of the Adriatic Sea as a permanent laboratory for numerical approach

Georg Umgiesser et al.

Summary: Understanding water circulation in oceans and coastal seas is crucial for oceanographic and climate research. Hydrodynamic modelling has become a fundamental tool for describing marine dynamics and human impact on the sea. The semi-enclosed Adriatic Sea serves as a natural laboratory for hydrodynamic modelling, with various models applied to this region. However, current modelling studies often underestimate the importance of representing land-coastal-sea fluxes in detail. Recommendations for model implementation are provided to enhance the applicability of hydrodynamic models in future studies.

Water quality integrated system: A strategic approach to improve bathing water management

Pierluigi Penna et al.

Summary: The study aims to reduce the impact of microbial contamination on bathing water in the Adriatic Sea, developed with the EU Interreg Italy-Croatia Project. It includes a water quality integrated system with real-time monitoring, autosampler, forecast system, and alert system to predict potential ecological risks. Preliminary results will be used to develop guidelines for quality assessments and governance decisions.

Successful mitigation of stormwater-driven nutrient, fecal bacteria and suspended solids loading in a recreational beach community

Amy E. Grogan et al.

Summary: Urban areas often pollute marine and estuarine waterways with stormwater runoff, threatening human health and local economies. The implementation of Best Management Practices, tailored to individual situations, can effectively reduce pollution levels in coastal waters. A study in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, USA, showed significant reductions in stormwater discharge and pollutant loading after the installation of a set of BMPs.

Evaluating the impacts of foreshore sand and birds on microbiological contamination at a freshwater beach

Ammar Safaie et al.

Summary: Contamination at the beaches can threaten their usage during the swimming season, potentially resulting in beach closures, and understanding the dynamics that control nearshore water quality is integral to effective beach management. By incorporating modeling frameworks like mechanistic models, sources and interactions impacting fecal indicator bacteria concentrations can be determined, helping to simulate and manage water quality effectively at the beaches.

High-Resolution Reanalysis of the Mediterranean Sea Biogeochemistry (1999-2019)

Gianpiero Cossarini et al.

Summary: The study presents a reanalysis of the Mediterranean Sea biogeochemistry within the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service framework, achieving good skill in simulating basin-wide values and variability in biogeochemical variables. Using multiple observation sources for qualitative and quantitative assessment, the research reveals basin-wide biogeochemical signals indicating surface deoxygenation, increases in alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations, and decreases in pH at the surface in the Mediterranean Sea.
