Pressure injuries in Australian public hospitals: A cost of illness study

Son Nghiem et al.

Summary: This study estimated the cost of pressure injuries in Australian public hospitals in 2020, demonstrating the economic burden they placed on the healthcare system. The total cost of pressure injuries was found to be AUD 9.11 billion, with the largest shares attributed to excess length of stay and treatment costs. It was concluded that reducing preventable pressure injuries and stopping the progression of early-stage pressure injuries could lead to significant cost savings for Australia and other countries with comparable healthcare systems.

The prevalence and prevention of pressure ulcers: A multicenter study of nine nursing homes in eastern China

Min Wei et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence and related factors of pressure ulcers in nursing homes in eastern China, finding associations between PU development and eating mode, bed-bound status, and Braden score. The prevalence of PUs in this study was similar to international studies, but prevention and treatment measures in nursing homes were insufficient, and there was a lack of measures to prevent PU development at home.

Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Sonia O. Labeau et al.

Summary: A study of 13,254 adults in 1117 ICUs across 90 countries found a high prevalence of pressure injuries, with 59.2% being ICU-acquired. Risk factors for ICU-acquired pressure injuries included age, sex, weight, comorbidities, and organ support. Increasing severity of pressure injuries was associated with higher mortality rates, highlighting the importance of prevention and proper care in ICU settings.

Nursing interventions for pressure injury prevention among critically ill patients: A systematic review

Bassam Alshahrani et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified four categories of interventions that are most effective in preventing pressure injuries among critical care patients: PI prevention bundles, repositioning and the use of surface support, prevention of medical device-related pressure injuries, and access to expertise. While all included studies reported a reduction in pressure injuries following the interventions, the strength of the evidence ranged from moderate to very low. Nurses play a vital role in prevention of pressure injuries, and education and training programs on PI prevention are important for successful prevention strategies.

Incidence and risk factors for pressure injuries in adults in specialised medical care: a prospective observational study

Sanna Stoltenberg et al.

Summary: The study using the Prevent Pressure Injury (PPI) risk assessment tool developed by Helsinki University Hospital showed that pressure injury risk increases with longer hospital stays and older age, with surgical patients having a higher risk compared to other specialty fields. Patients' primary and secondary diagnoses were also found to be associated with an increased pressure injury risk.

What is the incidence of medical device-related pressure injuries in adults within the acute hospital setting? A systematic review

Sarah Brophy et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the incidence of medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPI) in adults within the acute hospital setting, finding a prevalence rate of 28.1% and detailed documentation of injury locations, grading, and offending devices in most studies. Despite heterogeneity, the review highlights the importance of developing strategies to reduce MDRPI morbidity in acute care settings.
