Effect of Junction Aggregation on the Dynamics of Supramolecular Polymers and Networks

Mostafa Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Transient structures based on associative polymers have potential applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and electronics. However, the phase separation of polar pairwise associations from nonpolar polymer chains often leads to junction aggregation, which affects the network structure and dynamics. The knowledge of the effect of design parameters on aggregates and their consequent effects on material properties is limited.

Connectivity Defects in Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer Networks at Different Self-Sorting Regimes

Mostafa Ahmadi et al.

Summary: The properties of polymer networks are influenced by the presence of connectivity defects like loops and dangling ends. Transient polymer networks based on metallo-supramolecular polymer networks and hindrance can self-sort to develop networks with fewer defects. By using heteroleptic complexes and adjusting the coordination geometry preference, we can control the self-sorting process and reduce the formation of primary loops and dangling ends. Our results show that copper(I) can adopt the desired geometry requirements and create a network with the least number of defects.

Landscape of Network Connectivity in Transient Polymer Networks with Competing Homo- and Hetero-complementary Bonds

Mostafa Ahmadi

Summary: Polymer networks exhibit various mechanical properties depending on their microstructure and connectivity. By using mixed telechelic polymer precursors capable of forming competing homo- and hetero-complementary bonds, a wide range of network structures and mechanical properties can be achieved. The Miller-Macosko's recursive model is extended to tetra-arm polymer precursors to visualize the composition and time evolution of network connectivity. The model is validated by comparing its predictions with the rheological behavior of transient metallo-supramolecular polymer networks.

Self-Sorting of Transient Polymer Networks by the Selective Formation of Heteroleptic Metal-Ligand Complexes

Mostafa Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Advances in self-sorting mechanisms have led to the development of well-defined supra-molecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with unprecedented geometries. However, these advances have been rarely applied to the design of metallo-supramolecular polymer networks (MSPNs). To address this gap, steric hindrance was used as a self-sorting mechanism to construct MSPNs based on the formation of heteroleptic complexes. These results open up a promising interface between polymer science and coordination chemistry.

Network Percolation in Transient Polymer Networks with Temporal Hierarchy of Energy Dissipation

Mostafa Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Transient polymer networks with a temporal hierarchy of energy dissipation have advantages in various applications. In this study, we extended the mean-field Miller-Macosko's recursive model to predict the network percolation in metallo-supramolecular polymer networks. We also developed a simple thermodynamic model to predict the composition of metal complexes with different coordination geometries. The experimental results confirmed the accuracy of the theoretical model and revealed the relationship between the network structure and macroscopic properties in transient polymer networks.

Coordination geometry in metallo-supramolecular polymer networks

Batoul Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: Nature offers a variety of transient interactions, which have inspired the introduction of different supramolecular assemblies in synthetic materials to achieve biomimetic functions. Metal-ligand coordination, as one of the most commonly used transient bonds, plays a crucial role in the design of robust and stimuli-responsive metallo-supramolecular polymer networks (MSPNs). However, the coordination geometry of the metal complex is often overlooked, despite significant advancements in controlling the spatial configuration of supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs). This article classifies existing reports on the coordination geometry of MSPNs and reviews relevant self-sorting mechanisms of SCCs, highlighting the potential of coordination geometry as a new design parameter in polymeric systems.

Mostafa Ahmadi et al.

Summary: In this study, heteroleptic complexes were shown to play a role in the formation of physical hydrogels by mixing different functionalized polymer precursors and transition metal ions. The emergence of a third relaxation mode associated with heteroleptic complexes was revealed through rheological measurements, indicating the formation of heteroleptic complexes.
