TGA-FTIR Analysis of Biomass Samples Based on the Thermal Decomposition Behavior of Hemicellulose, Cellulose, and Lignin

Esin Apaydin Varol et al.

Summary: The slow pyrolysis characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass and its three major components were investigated using TGA-FTIR. Different compositions and ratios of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, olive pomace, sunflower waste, and pinecone were studied. The results showed that the decomposition temperatures of hemicellulose and lignin exhibited broad ranges, while that of cellulose was detected to be within a narrower range. FTIR analysis revealed that higher cellulose and hemicellulose contents led to higher concentrations of CO and CO2. The Coats-Redfern model was used to calculate the chemical kinetics, and the activation energy for thermal decomposition was determined. The product yields of pyrolytic oil and char were also measured.

Study on ZSM-5 catalytic pyrolysis mechanism of cellulose based on the Py-GC/MS and the density functional theory

Xiaoxue Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the products and reaction mechanisms of cellulose during non-catalytic and catalytic pyrolysis with ZSM-5 catalyst were analyzed using Py-GC/MS and DFT. The results showed that catalytic pyrolysis reduced the furan content and introduced aromatic hydrocarbons as new components. DFT studies demonstrated the involvement of hydrogen proton at the catalyst's acid sites in most cellulose pyrolysis reactions. Catalytic pyrolysis significantly lowered the activation energy for dehydration and de-carbonylation compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis.

Production of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by segmented in situ and ex situ two-stage coupled catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and waste plastics

Xiaojie Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of Choerospondias axillaris seeds and low-density polyethylene using a segmented co-pyrolysis system with different in situ catalyst addition ratios. The results showed that segmented co-pyrolysis can significantly increase the relative content of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and reduce the wax yield.
