Negative tension controls stability and structure of intermediate filament networks

Ehud Haimov et al.

Summary: For 2D networks with mobile three-way junctions, a negative tension is necessary for network stability. The presence of symmetric junctions and the balance between tension and junction energy determine the optimal density of the network.

Deep Learning-Accelerated Designs of Tunable Magneto-Mechanical Metamaterials

Chunping Ma et al.

Summary: This article introduces an inverse design framework for active metamaterials using magneto-mechanical actuation. The framework utilizes a deep residual network to accelerate the design process and achieve predetermined strains in the metamaterials. The designed complex metamaterials are fabricated using a direct-ink-writing printing method of magnetic soft materials. The framework opens avenues for designing active metamaterials with desired mechanical, acoustic, thermal, and electromagnetic properties.

Magnetic Resonance Guided Navigation of Untethered Microgrippers

Arijit Ghosh et al.

Summary: The study optimized the magnetic dipole moment of untethered thermally responsive grippers for efficient coupling to external magnetic resonance (MR) fields. Gripper encapsulation in a millimeter sized wax pellet reduces friction with surrounding tissue and enables MR Navigation (MRN) of a 700 μm sized microgripper within narrow channels in tissue phantoms and in an ex vivo porcine esophagus. The results provide convincing proof-of-concept evidence that it is possible to sequentially image, move, and guide a submillimeter functional microsurgical tool in tissue conduits using a commercial preclinical MR system, which is an important step towards the clinical translation of untethered microtools in combination with prior demonstrations of physiologically responsive in vivo biopsy.
