Phase aberration separation for holographic microscopy by alternating direction sparse optimization

Zhengzhong Huang et al.

Summary: The morphology and dynamics of label-free tissues can be studied using quantitative phase imaging, which measures changes in the optical field induced by the sample. However, the reconstructed phase is susceptible to phase aberrations due to its sensitivity to subtle changes in the optical field. In this study, a variable sparse splitting framework is introduced for quantitative phase aberration extraction. The optimization and regularization of the reconstructed phase are decomposed into object terms and aberration terms, allowing for fast and direct decomposition of background phase aberration using specific complete basis functions. By eliminating global background phase aberration, faithful phase reconstruction can be achieved. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging experiments demonstrate aberration-free imaging, relaxing the strict alignment requirements for holographic microscopes.

Phase aberration adaptive compensation in digital holography based on phase imitation and metric optimization

Zhenkai Chen et al.

Summary: We propose a numerical and accurate quadratic phase aberration compensation method in digital holography. A phase imitation method based on Gaussian 1σ-criterion is used to obtain the morphological features of the object phase using partial differential, filtering, and integration successively. An adaptive compensation method based on a maximum-minimum-average-α-standard deviation (MMA & α-SD) evaluation metric is also proposed to obtain optimal compensated coefficients by minimizing the above metric of the compensation function. The effectiveness and robustness of the method are demonstrated through simulation and experiments.

Phase aberration compensation via a self-supervised sparse constraint network in digital holographic microscopy

Ju Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-supervised sparse constraint network (SSCNet) is proposed for compensation of phase aberration in digital holographic microscopy without the need for perturbation hypothesis, additional labels or masks. By introducing Zernike model enhancement and sparse constraints, aberration can be fitted with only a single measured hologram. Simulation and experiment results show that SSCNet can accurately compensate phase aberration without the use of object-free masks, and is more stable than other algorithms. SSCNet can be applied to other samples with high accuracy and minimal time requirement. Moreover, SSCNet has an advantage in the adaptive compensation of dynamic aberration in continuous measurement, making it an effective and practical fitting algorithm for phase aberration compensation.

Automatic and accurate compensation for phase aberrations in digital holographic microscopy based on iteratively reweighted least squares fitting

Shuo Liu et al.

Summary: An automatic and accurate phase aberration compensation method is proposed based on iteratively reweighted least squares fitting for phase-contrast imaging in digital holographic microscopy. This method starts from conventional least squares fitting in the whole image and attributes lower weights to pixels with higher fitting residuals in an iterative reweighting procedure, automatically reducing the influence of specimen and noise. Both phase curvature and high-order aberrations can be corrected without extra operation. Numerical simulation demonstrates its superiority over state-of-the-art numerical methods, while experimental results show its robustness and fast imaging speed for living cells.
