Radon dynamic adsorption coefficients of two activated charcoals at different temperatures in nitrogen environment

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: CarboACT and Saratech, two types of activated charcoal with low radioactivity, are widely used in radon removal and enrichment processes for modern rare-event search experiments. A flow-through experimental system was established to measure the radon dynamic adsorption coefficients (k(alpha)) of CarboACT and Saratech under N-2 condition and within the temperature range of -85 degrees C to 200 degrees C, in support of CDEX collaboration on radon issue. The experimental results showed an exponential increase in radon dynamic adsorption coefficients of CarboACT and Saratech with decreasing temperature, and different elution curves were observed. Extrapolated to 77K, the estimated k(alpha)-values of CarboACT and Saratech at liquid nitrogen temperature were 1.2 x 10(13) (L/g) and 9.5 x 10(11) (L/g), respectively. The overall adsorption capacities of these two activated charcoals provide valuable information for rare-event search studies related to radon issue.

Preparation and characterization of a high-efficiency radon adsorbing material based on activated carbon modified by water immersion and freeze-thaw

Haihong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon was modified through water immersion and freeze-thaw cycles to enhance its radon adsorption capacity. The most effective modification involved three cycles of freezing at -80 degrees C and thawing at 50 degrees C, resulting in a 24% increase in radon adsorption coefficient. The modified activated carbon exhibited significant changes in morphology, with a significant increase in specific surface area of micropores, which was positively correlated with radon adsorption capacity.

A sustainable photocatalytic fuel cell integrated photo-electro-Fenton hybrid system using KOH activated carbon felt cathodes for enhanced Amaranth degradation and electricity generation

Shen-Hui Thor et al.

Summary: The photo-electro-Fenton (PEF) process was combined with the photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) to remove Amaranth from water and generate electricity simultaneously. The activation of carbon felt (CF) cathodes using potassium hydroxide (KOH) improved the efficiency of oxygen reduction reaction and decolourisation. The results showed that KOH activated CF cathodes increased the electro-generation of hydrogen peroxide and achieved higher power density compared to pristine CF cathodes.

Changes in the pore structure of modified sludge-activated carbon and its effect on the adsorption characteristics of CO2 under high pressure

Jiyan Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a sludge-activated carbon adsorbent with CO2 adsorption capacity was prepared by pyrolysis and activation of municipal sewage sludge, and then the activated carbon was modified to increase its CO2 adsorption capacity. The results showed that modification with hydrofluoric acid and sodium hydroxide increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the activated carbon, while modification with aminopropyl triethoxysilane-diethanol monoisopropanolamine reduced these properties. The modifications had a significant impact on the saturated adsorption capacity, and the promoting pressure thresholds were determined for each modification method.

Effect of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Database Selection on the Assessment of Gas Storage and Separation Potentials of MOFs

Hilal Daglar et al.

Summary: The development of computation-ready metal-organic framework databases has accelerated high-throughput computational screening of materials for gas storage and separation. Differences in structural features due to database selection significantly impact the calculated gas uptakes and ideal selectivities of materials at low pressure. The identification of top-performing materials for gas separation strongly depends on the choice of the database used in simulations.

From excess to absolute adsorption isotherm: The effect of the adsorbed density

Hasan Ghasemzadeh et al.

Summary: Estimating an accurate quantity of adsorbed density in shale reservoirs is crucial for production, sequestration, and enhanced oil recovery. This study used hybrid molecular dynamics/grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations to investigate methane adsorbed density under different conditions, showing that the selected range from the methane density profile significantly affects the estimation of the absolute adsorption isotherm. Adsorbed density calculated with the effective pore width from helium probe was found to be the most appropriate in calculating the accessible pore volume for excess adsorption isotherm.
