The critical role of nuclear heating rates, thermalization efficiencies, and opacities for kilonova modelling and parameter inference

Mattia Bulla

Summary: We improved the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code possis to model kilonovae from neutron star mergers. We explored how simplistic assumptions on heating rates, thermalization efficiencies, and opacities affect kilonova spectra and light curves, and found that deviations from realistic models can be significant. These discrepancies should be taken into account when studying kilonovae and performing inference on ejecta parameters.

On the detection of the electromagnetic counterparts from lensed gravitational wave events by binary neutron star mergers

Hao Ma et al.

Summary: Future ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors are expected to detect lensed binary neutron star (BNS) mergers, which can provide a unique tool for cosmology. This study investigates the detectability of the optical/infrared electromagnetic counterparts (kilonovae/afterglows) from these lensed BNS mergers. It is found that future telescopes like Vera C. Rubin Observatory, China Space Station Telescope, and Euclid can hardly detect the electromagnetic counterparts, while Roman Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope have the capability to detect a few or more such events per year.

Modelling populations of kilonovae

Christian N. Setzer et al.

Summary: The 2017 detection of a kilonova coincident with gravitational-wave emission has confirmed neutron star mergers as the major source of heavy elements and constrained alternative theories of gravity. With only one confident detection available, improved theoretical understanding is needed to model the diverse signals expected from such a population. Quick and calibrated models are required to design observational strategies and interpret new observations.

Population properties and multimessenger prospects of neutron star-black hole mergers following GWTC-3

Sylvia Biscoveanu et al.

Summary: Through the analysis of four detected NSBH mergers in gravitational waves, it is found that the black holes in NSBHs have lower masses and smaller spin parameters than those in black hole binaries. Furthermore, a mass gap between the most massive neutron stars and least massive black holes in NSBHs is discovered. Using a gravitational-wave data-driven approach, it is found that less than 14% of detectable NSBH mergers will have an electromagnetic counterpart.

(An)isotropy measurement with gravitational wave observations

Reed Essick et al.

Summary: Using the GWTC-3 catalog from LVK's third observing run, we constrained the distribution of merging compact binaries across the celestial sphere. Based on 63 confident detections from O3, we found that the relative variability of the rate density across the sky is <16% at 90% confidence when assuming the logarithm of the rate density follows a Gaussian random field with correlation length >= 10 degrees. This constraint tightens to <3.5% when the correlation length is >= 20 degrees. Although our new data provides the tightest constraints on anisotropies so far, there is no overwhelming evidence in favor of isotropy.

Data-driven Expectations for Electromagnetic Counterpart Searches Based on LIGO/Virgo Public Alerts

Polina Petrov et al.

Summary: Searches for electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational-wave signals have intensified, but no second secure identification has been made yet. The improved data analysis has increased the overall number of detections, but the well-localized events make up a smaller proportion. Simulations of future observing runs provide insights into the impact of these changes.

Kilonova Detectability with Wide-field Instruments

Eve A. Chase et al.

Summary: Kilonovae are transient events in the ultraviolet, optical, and infrared spectrum powered by radioactive decay of heavy elements following a neutron star merger. Joint observations of kilonovae and gravitational waves can provide important constraints for understanding the origin of heavy elements in the Galaxy. This study quantifies the capabilities of different wide-field-of-view instruments to detect kilonovae and explores the variation in detectability with different properties of the kilonova ejecta.

Target-of-opportunity Observations of Gravitational-wave Events with Vera C. Rubin Observatory

Igor Andreoni et al.

Summary: The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 has opened up the field of gravitational-wave multimessenger astronomy. By identifying the optical/infrared kilonova, scientists were able to locate the source precisely and conduct in-depth multiwavelength follow-up studies. This new frontier presents opportunities to map the diversity of kilonova properties, provide constraints on the Hubble constant, and explore fundamental physics.

Multi-Messenger Constraints on the Hubble Constant through Combination of Gravitational Waves, Gamma-Ray Bursts and Kilonovae from Neutron Star Mergers

Mattia Bulla et al.

Summary: The simultaneous detection of gravitational waves and light from the binary neutron star merger GW170817 provides a direct estimate of the Hubble constant H-0, independent of cosmic distance ladder and specific cosmological model. However, the degeneracy in gravitational-wave analysis leads to imprecise H-0 values. Recent studies investigate the viewing-angle dependence of electromagnetic signal to constrain inclination and improve H-0.

Black hole-neutron star mergers: The first mass gap and kilonovae

P. Drozda et al.

Summary: Observations of X-ray binaries indicate a lack of compact objects in the 2-5 solar mass range, and from LIGO/Virgo data on binary compact remnant masses, it is suggested that BH-NS mergers may host compact objects in the first mass gap. The study reveals a low likelihood of mass ejection during BH-NS mergers and the potential bright kilonova events detectable by large telescopes.

Numerical relativity simulations of the neutron star merger GW190425: microphysics and mass ratio effects

Summary: GW190425 was the second GW signal from a binary neutron star merger detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Simulations of 28 BNS mergers showed that asymmetric mergers can form heavier discs, and the kilonovae associated with GW190425 were relatively dim and difficult to detect with current wide-field surveys.

Optical superluminal motion measurement in the neutron-star merger GW170817

Kunal P. Mooley et al.

Summary: The afterglow of the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 provided evidence for a structured relativistic jet and a link between such mergers and short gamma-ray bursts. Superluminal motion was detected using radio very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), providing constraints on the viewing angle, opening angle of the jet core, and initial Lorentz factor. A new superluminal motion measurement at seven times the speed of light, utilizing Hubble Space Telescope precision astrometry and previous radio VLBI data, improved the measurement of the Lorentz factor of the jet wing and the constraints on the viewing angle and initial Lorentz factor of the jet core.

The Role of Core-collapse Physics in the Observability of Black Hole Neutron Star Mergers as Multimessenger Sources

Jaime Roman-Garza et al.

Summary: Recent 1D core-collapse simulations show a non-monotonic relationship between the explosivity of massive stars and their precollapse core masses, affecting the formation of coalescing black hole-neutron star binaries significantly. Direct collapse leading to low-mass black holes increases BH-NS merger detection rates, with the NS radius and equation of state influencing the likelihood of electromagnetic counterparts being produced. Models based on 1D core-collapse simulations predict a higher ratio of BH-NS mergers to binary BHs, but may overestimate the local merger density rate of binary black holes.

PS15cey and PS17cke: prospective candidates from the Pan-STARRS Search for kilonovae

O. R. McBrien et al.

Summary: The discovery of the first kilonova, AT2017gfo, revolutionized time domain astronomy in August 2017, associated with the gravitational wave signal GW170817. Wide-field surveys have been optimizing search strategies to maximize efficiency in detecting fast and faint transients since then. Two promising candidates, PS15cey and PS17cke, have been identified from an archival search, with PS15cey being a luminous, fast-declining transient at 320 Mpc, and PS17cke being a faint and fast-declining event at 15 Mpc. Various explosion scenarios have been explored for PS17cke, with uncertainty in the explosion epoch but a plausible kilonova candidate based on model comparisons.
