Reduction of Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by the Pretreatment Removal of Emerging Pollutants: A Review

Jianguo Zhang et al.

Summary: Ultrafiltration (UF) processes can effectively remove suspended solids and organic macromolecules, but UF membrane fouling remains a major obstacle. This review explores various pretreatment measures to address this issue and focuses on the mechanisms of emerging pollutants (EPs) in UF processes. The study examines the removal efficiency and separation mechanism for EPs in combination with UF membrane separation technology, and evaluates membrane fouling based on material/pore characteristics of the membrane and cake layer structure. The findings suggest a need to develop membrane separation processes that can efficiently separate EPs.

Experimental studies on the effects of coagulation and adsorption as a pretreatment process on the microfiltration of oily wastewater

Niloufar Lashkari Shafiei et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of the microfiltration membrane system in treating oily wastewater was improved through the combined effects of pretreatment, membrane modification, and optimization of operating parameters. Coagulation and adsorption were used as pretreatment steps to reduce COD. The prepared polyethersulfone membrane containing SiO2-g-polymethacrylic acid nanoparticles showed increased flux through membrane modification and optimization of operating parameters.

Mechanism study on the effect of peracetic acid (PAA), UV/PAA and ultrasonic/PAA oxidation on ultrafiltration performance during algae-laden water treatment

Tingting Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, peracetic acid (PAA), ultraviolet (UV)/PAA, and ultrasonic (US)/PAA pre-oxidation were used to improve the ultrafiltration (UF) performance for algae-laden water treatment. The results showed that PAA at a dosage of 10 mg/L achieved the best performance with a 76.26% reduction in membrane fouling resistance. Low dosage of UV/PAA effectively controlled fouling by enhancing the degradation of dissolved organics. The study also revealed that moderate oxidation, with high organic degradation and low cell rupture, was the key principle for algae-laden water treatment.

Fouling mitigation in produced water treatment by conjugation of advanced oxidation process and microfiltration

Anna Danielli da Fonseca Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study found that photoperoxidation treatment before microfiltration can effectively increase oil removal efficiency and reduce membrane fouling, especially in oil/water emulsions with viscosifier. Additionally, higher salt concentration can promote fouling resistance and improve permeate quality.

Summary: The study demonstrated that UV/PS pretreatment effectively reduced membrane fouling caused by EfOM, improving flux and fouling reversibility, and shifting fouling mechanisms from successive pore blocking to single standard blocking. UV/H2O2 pretreatment was found to be ineffective under the investigated conditions.

Microcoagulation improved the performance of the UF-RO system treating the effluent from a coastal municipal wastewater treatment plant: a pilot-scale study

Tong Yu et al.

Summary: Microcoagulation has been shown to improve the performance of UF-RO systems treating wastewater with high and fluctuant salinity, enhancing contaminant removal and cleaning efficiencies. The microbial communities on membrane fouling were found to be similar to those in seawater and seawater RO plants, indicating the potential for microcoagulation to be effective in treating effluent from coastal municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Effects of micro-flocculation pretreatment on the ultrafiltration membrane fouling caused by different dissolved organic matters in treated wastewater

Lanxin Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that using micro-flocculation as a pretreatment approach can effectively reduce membrane fouling in UF caused by organic matters in treated wastewater. Micro-flocculation combined with UF process showed improved removal efficiency of organic matters, especially humic acid and sodium alginate. The results suggest that micro-flocculation pretreatment can effectively alleviate membrane fouling when treating wastewater containing humic acid, sodium alginate, or fulvic acid.

Revealing the membrane fouling mechanism caused by the denitrification filter effluent during ozonation by model assessment

Yuan Bai et al.

Summary: In this study, prevailing fouling models were applied to assess the fouling behavior of denitrification filter (DNF) effluent during ozonation. The analysis revealed that different molecular weight fractions contributed differently to membrane fouling, with high molecular weight fractions decreasing and low molecular weight fractions increasing in fouling contribution as ozone dosage increased.
