Recent Progress in High-Strength and Robust Regenerated Cellulose Materials

Hu Tu et al.

Summary: Cellulose, as the most abundant sustainable polymer, has the potential to act as an ideal substitute for plastics due to its low cost, wide availability, and biodegradability. Recent achievements in developing cellulose green solvents and regenerated cellulose materials with high strength through bottom-up approaches have shown potential applications in textiles, biomedicine, energy storage, packaging, etc. Importantly, these cellulose-based materials can be biodegraded in soil and oceans, reducing environmental pollution.

A facile, clean construction of biphilic surface on filter paper via atmospheric air plasma for highly efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsions

Xiaojing Yang et al.

Summary: A novel method utilizing atmospheric air plasma treatment to prepare durable biphilic surface on cellulose filter paper has been reported. The as-prepared sample exhibited excellent separation performance for surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions, and showed durability against ultrasonication in acetone as well as recyclability for over 20 cycles. This study may provide a facile and environment-friendly approach to prepare filtering materials for highly efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsions.

Abundance and Distribution of Microplastics in the Water and Riverbank Sediment in Malaysia - A Review

Wei Sheng Choong et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a major global environmental issue that poses severe harm to aquatic organisms, especially in Malaysia, where an estimated 0.94 million tons of mishandled plastic wastes are generated daily. The impacts of microplastic pollution include health deterioration, digestive tract blockage, and intoxication of aquatic organisms. This review discusses the sources, prevalence, fate, and transport of microplastics, as well as methods to access them, with a focus on freshwater systems and sediments.
