Review of flash sintering with strong electric field

Hongyang Zhou et al.

Summary: Flash sintering is a novel field-assisted sintering technology for ceramics that has attracted significant research interest since its first report in 2010. Recent studies have shown that the sintering temperature can be dramatically reduced, even down to room temperature, with the application of an electric field. However, increasing the electric field strength in flash sintering poses new challenges and questions for understanding the sintering mechanism.

Defects in flash-sintered ceramics and their effects on mechanical properties

Xin Li Phuah et al.

Summary: The effects of electric field and current during flash sintering result in unique microstructural characteristics in ceramics, such as gradient microstructures, high-density dislocations, stacking faults, and chemical segregations. These defects have been shown to enhance mechanical properties through defect-mediated inelastic deformation mechanisms. In situ studies on the temperature-dependent transition of deformation mechanisms are also highlighted in flash-sintered ceramics.

Flash sintering: A new frontier in defect physics and materials science

Rishi Raj et al.

Summary: Interest in ultrafast sintering is growing, with a focus on electric and electromagnetic field accelerations, as well as heating rates. Flash sintering, with its ability to quantitatively control and measure electric field, current density, and temperature, is becoming increasingly important for manufacturing. The rise in electrical conductivity and electroluminescence in flash sintering, and their potential significance in accelerated sintering, raise new fundamental questions in the science of flash sintering.

Electric-field-assisted processing of ceramics: Nonthermal effects and related mechanisms

Olivier Guillon et al.

Summary: Field-assisted processing methods, such as spark plasma sintering and flash sintering, expand the toolbox of ceramic engineering. Electric fields can induce nonthermal effects, including modifying defect formation and generating new phases. The interplay of ion transport and electrical conductivity is crucial for understanding effects caused by electric fields.

Effect of external electric field on diffusivity and flash sintering of 8YSZ: A molecular dynamics study

Wenwu Xu et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations show that the presence of an external electric field promotes the formation of Frenkel pair defects in 8YSZ, leading to enhanced diffusivities of cations and anions in the system. This understanding provides insights into the flash sintering mechanisms of ionic ceramics, particularly the coupled thermal-field effect during the process.
